152 Aldeburgh Restaurant Description
Those concerned that the establishment of this corner of Suffolk as an opera-goers paradise might dilute irreparably the charm and haunting beauty of the area must be pleasantly surprised that some forty years on quite the reverse is true, and the legacy of Benjamin Britten added significantly to the character and the economy of this very special part of England.
Classical music and quality eating are close friends, so no surprise that the quality of eating out has grown dramatically, with restaurants like 152aldeburgh offering a cuisine that leans heavily on local produce and inspiration. Opening at 10am they are well known for the little delicacies that make re-entry into the everyday world that much more appealing - just try their organic pastries.
Lunch and dinner are served by a la carte and menu du jour menus and might include starters of escabeche of mackerel with new potato and chive salad, coarse pork and bacon terrine with bramley chutney and toasted brioche, and the famed Aldeburgh fish soup with rouille.
Main dishes may field herb crusted lamb cutlets, served with fine beans and dauphinoise potato, confit duck leg with spring greens and oyster mushrooms, or good honest fish and chips, with tartare sauce. Puddings are a real speciality of the house and layered lemon curd with coconut biscuit and raspberry jelly competes with a chocolate torte and marshmallow. Cheese buffs will delight in Suffolk Gold, Mrs Temple's Binham Blue and other soft, smelly and hard treats drawn from a wider background.
Both Andrew Lister and chef Garry Cook have international experience, and teamed up again in 2003 to open 152aldeburch, which has never looked back. They are a prime example of two capable people leading a small but dedicated team, and concentrating on doing just that, to great effect.

We read promising reviews of 152 Aldeburgh and keenly booked for my mother’s birthday lunch. Booking was smooth and easy, we all looked certain to a great meal and special occasion. We arrived and all was looking great. To start, we asked if we could change table, which was no problem as the restaurant was nearly empty. Well then it happened, the more experienced waitress was obviously having issues or a bad day and then proceeded to slam glasses and cutlery on the table whilst we sat there. We ordered and food began to arrive, or should I say plates again thrown at the table, I ordered a bean parcel, which was very disappointing. The others enjoyed their food.
By the time plates were cleared from mains - we were told by the same waitress - do you want to see the dessert menu or not! Coffees? No? Well at this point we all looked at each other, what terrible service, the waitress then returned to the bar and announced to the other two waitresses, right, I'm off home.
I can honestly say, we were truly unwelcome and felt like we were imposing on people’s lives, I suggest that if you want good service for a special occasion then don’t chance it. We shy away from chains normally, but at least they are trained in customer service. We did approach the younger waiting staff and complained after my mother had left, but at that point it was too late.

152 has always been a favourite of ours - it's been through several changes over the last 5 years but the current owners have made it that bit special.
With an excellent menu and wine list the place remains comfortably informal. Children are welcomed (and remarkably, aren't expected just to eat sausage & chips). Service is prompt and friendly.
Being within a few yards of the beach the seafood is always excellent - but on a gloomy February weekend we'd recommend the Sunday roast. Fulfilling without being heavy.
