Acorn House Restaurant Description
This extraordinary restaurant on Swinton Street has been described as one of the most important events in London catering, and few would disagree with that. Set up by Arthur Potts Dawson whose CV reads like a roll of honour though some of the best restaurant names, he has taken as his theme Modern London. Backed by the Shoreditch Trust which delivers the training to the local community, the restaurant offers glamorous fresh food in an eco-friendly way. The whole project smacks of a green approach to organised catering.
Acorn House offers a wide range of good eating options at lunchtime, soups, salads, pastas and main courses from a menu that incorporates the best of the season's ingredients. The dinner carte, for instance carries char-grilled cuttlefish, followed by twice cooked pork belly, or gnocchi Genovese. The dessert menu kicks off cheese - nice reversal there - and positively encourages you go for the Calvados, before listing the 'sweet stuff', which includes strawberry trifle and brandy snap.
Your Reviews of Acorn House Restaurant
Stephen Emms (25 January 2008)
Splashing critics’ quotes on a blackboard outside may seem a good idea, but with one attention-grabbing scribe declaring this ‘the most important restaurant to open in the past 200 years,’ such a feverish sense of expectation can result in a sense of anti-climax. So whilst we admired the clean, simple café-like interior and the eco credentials such as sustainable-sourced food, and low carbon footprint, we felt, on a practical note, that the tables were a rather tight fit and the prices astronomical. Despite this, the menu changes every month and the food is undoubtedly good. Seared prawns, golden salsify and chilli vinegar were perfectly light, a wintry stilton and walnut risotto was top comfort food and rump of lamb with dragoncello sauce and borlotti beans seemed straight out of a Florentine trattoria. Best of all, were the puddings - a humble baked apple and white truffle ice cream, which were outright winners.
