Afghan Kitchen Description

There's no tacky décor, fancy rugs or rusty artefacts, even pictures of a war-torn country are notable by their absence, but still Afghan Kitchen manages to remain truly authentic. And they do it effortlessly, keep the décor simple - wooden tables, potted plants and communal seating - and offer a short menu focusing on robust cooking.

There are four vegetarian and meat options each on the menu, all arrive in vibrant colours and exude richness, from the lamb and spinach stew and the creamy chicken in yogurt, to the mildly spiced pumpkin or aubergine in yogurt. A bowl of pilaf rice, mixed pickles and bread dotted with poppy and sesame seeds make excellent accompaniments.

Afghani cuisine has always remained opened to external influences, thereby resulting in balanced tastes and contrasting flavours, and Afghan Kitchen is one of the better places to experience all this in the Islington area.

Your Reviews of Afghan Kitchen

Londoner (1 June 2007)

I was until recently a big fan of the Afghan Kitchen. I loved how tasty everything was, and the fact that there are only a few things on the menu. However, I have recently noticed some problems with the billing system, and that the food has deteriorated in quality. They don't itemise their bills, which seems to sometimes cause a problem when calculating totals. I have, on a couple of occasions, paid what they asked for, left and then realised that it surely shouldn't have been that much. On my last visit I decided to check when I had already left, and found a sizeable discrepancy. Also, when ordering take-away, there is sometimes a problem with the size of the servings. When ordering two servings of rice, for example, it is put into a container that is a different shape from the other dishes, but is actually the exact same size as one serving. For this they charge £7, which seems a bit ridiculous for a tiny amount of rice from a small, informal restaurant. I used to be a regular here, but after their frequent mix-ups with charging and portion size, along with the deteriorating quality of the meat used, I won't be going again.
