Al Casbah Description

This curious little place has a real mix and match approach to interior design. There's a choice of low-slung sofas and tightly packed in tables, or you can sit on cushions on the floor for a really authentic experience. Due to the small size of the restaurant booking in advance can be a highly wise move. The food at Al Casbah is also very authentic, with traditional Moroccan cuisine ranging from tasty fish tagines to a variety of other great fish dishes, or the likes of lamb with couscous. Desserts are all designed for those with a very sweet tooth, or you can simply sit back and relax with one of their strong Arabic coffees.

It has delicious food, lovely ambience, and beautiful décor. The food is really tasty and after talking to the manager I discovered most of it is organic even though it doesn’t say so on the menu. I am a vegan and they happily change items around for me. One or two of the staff don’t speak English so well and can get a bit confused, this is the only problem. I come here regularly because of the healthy, flavourful food, comfortable seating, relaxed atmosphere and the nice staff.

We had experienced the worst service ever. After being offered a table we had waited at least ten minutes for service, but had to go ourselves to find a menu as they had not come. When finally we call the waitress to take the order she took it, only to come back a few minutes later with pen and paper to take it again as she did not remember a thing. What else went wrong? After taking the order she came back to say there was no side order of rice, so we ordered fries. The rice showed up anyways, as a starter, drinks were served only after remembering them twice, and they came after the starter (that we wanted as a side dish). We had ordered houmus and bread as starter, which never showed up at the table but was happily added to the bill. When the main dishes had finally come (Tangine) we said we'd like some other side, rice, fries or anything. It never came either. Cutlery was disgustingly dirty (we could easily tell what previous user had for meal). At the end, manager got angry for us pointing out the food not served and added to the bill. A group who had sat at the next table waited fifteen minutes to be served. No one showed up to welcome them, and they had wisely left. We pointed out the very poor service only to be told that that's how we did our things (I'm very serious here). The manager did not want to take credit card, and we had to go to a nearby bank machine. To sum up, the worst experience we've had in a restaurant ever. And we've travelled to many strange places with poor standards, but this was beyond comprehension.
