Alba
Old Lifeboat House, Wharf Road, St Ives, TR26 1LF
House in the former Lifeboat House, the restaurant takes its name appropriately enough from the SS Alba which went down off St Ives in 1938, and whose boiler may still be seen at low tide. Two local lifeboatmen were lost in the rescue, a grim foretaste of what was to happen the following year when the Coxswain and six crew members were lost in another incident at sea. Now the old lifeboat house has been converted and is cashing in on "the Tate effect" and any other effect that comes along and helps Cornwall to make economic sense of itself. The cooking owes something to Italy and an awful lot to the surrounding sea which yields first class ingredients straight off the boats with a freshness that most, ironically enough, have never had the good fortune to taste until they venture into somewhere like Alba and savour such delights as line-caught seabass with baby fennel, girolles and a langoustine broth.House in the former Lifeboat House, the restaurant takes its name appropriately enough from the SS Alba which went down off St Ives in 1938, and whose boiler may still be seen at low tide. Italy may emerge through a dish like grappa pannacotta served with roast strawberries. The wine list also has plenty of interest at prices that will not cause you to seek shelter from the financial storm. It's a pleasant place to dine, full of memories, modern art and with stunning views out to sea.

REVIEWS OF Alba
Rick (8 November 2007)
It could have been better. The starter of fish soup was excellent. The main meal from the specials board was very average and overpriced, and poor service in an empty restaurant. I was duly given my ten percent but have kicked myself ever since.
Rushworths (12 August 2007)
Highly recommended is how we'd describe the Alba Restaurant. A family of six adults and one six month old baby, could not have been better treated. A high chair was brought for the baby and space found for buggy, bags and a wheel-chair. Warming the baby's bottle was done with a smile. The food was great. We had the early bird 3-course menu for just £16.50 and every course was fresh, well cooked and presented and a delight to taste. This modern restaurant was very good in every aspect - friendly staff, good food and had a great view of the harbour, so we could not fault the Alba.
