Alfresco Cafe Bar Description
This is a cheerful place. Overlooking the harbour with an open-fronted continental-style restaurant, in the heart of this renowned fishing town (and more latterly a bit of culture as well), you immediately feel part of the place. There is a brilliant menu. It would be churlish not to make use of the vast amount of natural ingredients that is landed only a few metres away and this is done in great style.
Steamed crab dumplings could precede fillets of John Dory with cannellini beans, coriander and saffron, seared fillet of salmon with plum and star anise compote or seared marinated Barbary duck breast with straw potato cakes. Desserts are something of an improvement on what is normally on offer in seafood restaurants and you could try your hand at pistachio and chocolate roulade with a two-chocolate sauce.
There is a good lunch service carefully aimed at a clientele with different requirements. The wine list inspires and one is spoiled for choice, encouraged by Chilean and South African house wines from £12.95. Just what you need after a long stretch toiling round Tate St Ives.

We ate at Alfresco on Saturday night and what a fantastic find! We've been to St.Ives many times on holiday and were recommended to eat there. The food was excellent; I had the duck salad to start, followed by the monkfish, which was so succulent and juicy. My wife had bouillabaisse, which she said was stunning, and the chocolate and orange cheese cake was to die for. Thanks to the staff for making our evening so special and don't forget to try the summer pudding.

We went to the Alfresco Cafe Bar last night as it seemed like a nice place to eat. We got a lovely table overlooking the front and the members of staff were very welcoming to the family and pleasant enough. We ordered salad for starters with a dressing. When this arrived the salad looked decidedly drab and was covered heavily with the dressing, which was the only thing it tasted of. For mains we ordered bouillabaisse, I can only describe this £19.95 main course as inedible. All of the seafood in it was terribly overcooked, the fish tasted sour, the scallops were like rubber and had the roe left on and all was served in an almighty brown slop that tasted of nothing. The children’s food was no better, chicken with pesto and vegetables. The pesto was bitter, chicken overcooked and fatty and the vegetables looked like they had been cooked last week. Our total bill came up to £160 with wine, which was the only pleasant part of our dining experience. Sorry Alfresco, I think you can do better.
