Alfresco Cafe Bar Description

This is a cheerful place. Overlooking the harbour with an open-fronted continental-style restaurant, in the heart of this renowned fishing town (and more latterly a bit of culture as well), you immediately feel part of the place. There is a brilliant menu. It would be churlish not to make use of the vast amount of natural ingredients that is landed only a few metres away and this is done in great style.

Steamed crab dumplings could precede fillets of John Dory with cannellini beans, coriander and saffron, seared fillet of salmon with plum and star anise compote or seared marinated Barbary duck breast with straw potato cakes. Desserts are something of an improvement on what is normally on offer in seafood restaurants and you could try your hand at pistachio and chocolate roulade with a two-chocolate sauce.

There is a good lunch service carefully aimed at a clientele with different requirements. The wine list inspires and one is spoiled for choice, encouraged by Chilean and South African house wines from £12.95. Just what you need after a long stretch toiling round Tate St Ives.

Fixed Dinner

  • £13.95 (2 courses)

Your Reviews of Alfresco Cafe Bar

Marilyn (4 October 2008)

I ate there on my wedding day in September; there were twenty-two of us, and we took over the restaurant. I have to say the evening was lovely. We all found the food to be gorgeous, colourful, and everything was cooked to perfection. The girls were very helpful, and ensured that we had a good time. As for my new husband and me, we couldn’t have had a better start to our marriage. Alfresco was also the only restaurant who would fit us in, although there were much larger places, and allowing us to be the only diners that evening. So from Chris and me, and all our families, we would like to thank Alfresco. We will be back next year.

Michael (4 July 2008)

I am a local person, living in St Ives and have therefore eaten in most of the restaurants in the area, after trying Alfresco two weeks ago, I was pleasantly surprised. The girls were very helpful and created a fantastic atmosphere in the restaurant. The food was delicious. I had pan seared scallops with pea and mint puree for starters, which was so lovely and tasted fresh. For mains I had the Cornish fillet of beef with cabbage and bacon mash, and a lovely rich Cornish blue cheese and port sauce, which was cooked to medium-rare perfection. Although I thought I couldn’t fit any more food in, the temptation of a homemade roasted banana parfait with honey and ginger syrup got the better of me, and I ate the lot! Even though I was dining alone, the girls made me feel so welcome and kept me entertained all evening. All in all, a wonderful night and I will be back. Keep up the good work Alfresco.
