Amaya Description
Curry at midday for Ladies Who Lunch? What an impossible proposition, but believe me it's working here in the august purlieus of Motcomb Street, so settle down to the idea and stock up on the breath fresheners. It's one thing blasting your partner at bedtime with a gale of chicken tika masala; it's quite another inflicting it on fellow-Mums as you fight for a place amongst the Chelsea tractors outside the school.
Part of the Chutney Mary family, Amaya is in a class of its own and many trillions of miles away from flock wallpaper and frail paper napkins. In the first place it is large, open and decidedly dramatic. Nor are the kitchens tucked away in some faltering lean-to at the back. Each chef has his own grill-station in full view, each championing its own style, with the result that a wide range of dishes spanning the familiar to the almost unknown keep the customers on their toes. The result is arguably some of the best and most contemporary Indian cuisine in London. Not that the curry is all that evident, the menu is drawn more from Indian street food and grazing menus that use kebabs, grills and snack-jobs as their staple. Chef Karunesh Khana does a tasting menu with 11 different items that arrive in measured order. All of this is a refreshing change to a cuisine which has been around in Britain long enough now to sustain new approaches. Perhaps Amaya is leading the way.
