Amber Regent Description

Probably the best Chinese restaurant in Glasgow, it is slightly on the pricey side, though there are some good value set menus which can keep the bill down, and it is a reliable place to go.

The long established name of 'Amber' is synonymous with Andy Chung who pioneered the introduction of classical Chinese Cuisine to the City of Glasgow. Mr Chung started the first 'Amber' restaurant more than 20 years ago in Byres Road. He has since gained a strong reputation for undeniable quality and service and is now established on a convenient City Centre location on West Regent Street, hence the name Amber Regent.

It is in these surroundings he dispenses his culinary art and skills to all diners who appreciate sumptuous meals and unrivalled standards of excellence. The main restaurant boasts plush decor and elegant surroundings which are complimented by a range of quality oil paintings of Hong Kong and China scenes by Stewart Vernon, one of Glasgow's current elite artists.

Your Reviews of Amber Regent

Joe Foster (18 July 2009)

What can one say when served with such excellent food? Mussels and crystal prawns for starters were delicious, and the main courses were superb, scallops in black bean sauce, no roe, were fantastic and my wife's fillet of beef with seasonable vegetables was absolutely first class. The house white was better than we expected, worth every penny and finally the service is even better than most restaurants around. It’s definitely the place for that special night out, it was our 44th anniversary. Joe and Mags.

My mother and I had lunch at the Amber Regent in June 2009. I had high expectations and wasn't disappointed however I wouldn't say it's 'amazing'. I'd say it's above average foodwise and at the top end for service and environment. Intially I have to say though the greeting was on the cold side, which for what you are about to spend in the place does grate one slightly. However all the other waitresses were brilliant; professional and polite without being overfriendly and in your face like most places nowadays. The menu is vast and I had trouble choosing; there is a set lunch menu, which would have been far cheaper however I felt it seemed very standard. Now for the food and wine - brought quickly, which was a surprise for a start - I had spare ribs, standard and salty, my mother had the Mongolian soup, delicious and I wish I'd chosen that. Then we had a spicy prawn dish and the sea bass with rice, all excellent though the prawns weren't the best I'd had, perhaps the way they were cooked as they were definitely fresh. My mother reckoned the rice was the best she'd had. We each had house wine - red for her and white for me - both suprisingly good. So there you go - a review from a discerning customer. I say try it; it's expensive but choose wisely, i.e the more unusual, less standard dishes and you won't go wrong plus it's so beautiful inside it makes the ideal place for a special occaision. I'd go back only because the Chinese restaurants where I live are so awful.
