Going by the name it may seem like another eating place with a chef's name at the door, but step in to this first floor restaurant and you will either love or hate the deliberately dark, captivating interior. Inside, it's done up in an eccentric manner with old-fashioned furniture and mismatched paintings, and carries a quirky charm that will attract many diners.

With Andy Campbell at the helm, the kitchen prefers to keep things simple, with a touch of sophistication, and the daily changing menu could feature an intriguing summer salad of barrel aged feta cheese, fennel, strawberries, mint, poppy seeds and lemon oil to which soya, mirin, roasted blossoms or salmon fillet could be added. Commence with a Jewish chicken soup and follow on with jagdwurst sausage with caraway beer mustard and fries, and strawberries, vanilla and summer berry granita.

The private club downstairs is as dark and unusual as the rest of the venue and if being a part of all things unconventional fascinates you, then 23 Romilly Street is for you.
