Apartment, The Description
Located just up the road from the King's Theatre, The Apartment has sustained its early promise and remains one of the trendy spots to eat on the edge of the New Town. The fittings reminded me of an Oxbridge College's modern dining room - nothing skimped, modern and sensible, good taste and eminently practical. The atmosphere is not so far different either, apart from the music, but this contributes to the good buzz factor and is clearly popular with the clientele.
To describe the cuisine would take a long time, suffice to say that it is composed of many, all listed and fused under such headings as CHL's (chunky, healthy lines), Fish Things, The Slab and several others. You'll get the message pretty quickly. Be warned the helpings are generous but sharing is an option.
The staff actually manage to convey the impression that they enjoy working there and the overall ambience is of a clean, happy and open place where everybody matters. About £19.50 per head for three courses plus wine.

This restaurant became a bit of a local Bruntsfield institution when it first opened about 10 years ago. Back then I was a student and went there at least twice a year for the first few years. I thought it was really good value for money and loved the simple decor. I haven't been in about five years and was looking forward to going back. I have to say that I couldn't have been any more disappointed than I was on Saturday night.
For starters we had the seafood skewers and the quantity was disappointing. The prawns were under cooked which I've never seen before and the salmon was over cooked.
For main course almost all of us ordered the £14 ribeye steak. Every one of them came well under cooked and most accepted it anyway but two had to be sent back. I refrained but wasn't happy. But when I started to eat it I was shocked. I didn't finish half of it because most of it was fat. I felt the fries were from a frozen bag.
I thought they would give us coffee or dessert on the house but obviously the management don't do that kind of thing.

I have eaten here twice and I am gobsmacked by the bad reviews. I thought it was excellent with keen-to-please staff, interesting 'proper' food and a good buzz about the place. Also not expensive. Was I there when the owner was off? Also, perhaps he was just frazzled with the whole business of running a restaurant on very little sleep and a bucket load of stress. The restaurant trade would run anyone to the end of their tether - even nice people. I would urge anyone to go as it is very, very good.
