Armless Dragon Description
A long-standing feature of the Cardiff scene, Armless Dragon has established a reputation for reliability and a certain Welshness which tends to please both patriots and visitors. Seasonal variations are reflected well in the menu with fish as a main item.
A starter of laverballs with ginger pickled vegetables will get you in the mood. The Brecon lamb is a speciality, and monkfish with spinach and mussels in saffron sauce makes a memorable dish. The selection of cheeses does full credit to that little known range of delights from the lush pastures and well cropped turf of Wales.
The wine list has improved of late and now features over sixty bins, with some from Wales and a good choice at under £20. House wine at a very reasonable £8.90.
Fixed Lunch
- £12 (2 courses) to £14 (3 courses)

Well, I decided to take my partner out to the Armless Dragon so that he could experience Welsh cuisine. What a mistake, the Armless Dragon should be renamed Soulless Dragon. We arrived at 8.30 and the restaurant was cold that we kept our jackets on, unperturbed we sat down and looked at the menu choice, which looked very good. We ordered a bottle of wine, which the waiting staff plonked on our table and took off. I ordered cockles and laverbread fried cakes to start, they came back and try as I might could I find a cockle or much evidence of laverbread for that matter? No, I had been brought what was essentially a potato croquet, after asking the waitress where was the cockles I was advised this was a new menu and they were having some technical problems? I am still not sure where the problem lay other than them not putting any cockles in the starter. She proceeded to get me another only to find surprise, surprise another potato cake with no hint of a cockle. The main course was in all fairness very good, and desserts were ordered. I had lemon and honey syllabub and my partner had pannacotta; my luminous yellow dessert came back, it was actually lemon curd syllabub, not an experience I would rush back to and my partner tried in vain to cut through his pannacotta but an over zealous application of gelatine made this unachievable. We asked for help from the waitress, who despairingly took it to the chef who confirmed our opinion that it was inedible. This experience left us with £3.00 change from £100 spent. I believe from friends that The Armless Dragon used to be a good place to eat, I have to say I bought a meal for two for £9.00 from a supermarket last night, it was much better.

I took my wife and the in-laws to the Armless Dragon after hearing many a good word about it. We were celebrating my wife’s birthday. They were very welcomming and were accomodating with our thirteen month old little boy. The food was different and so very tasty. Every dish from the starters to the desserts were cooked to perfection. It’s highly recomended.
