Armstrongs Restaurant Description

Armstrongs, owned by Robert and Elizabeth Crookes, is housed in a Victorian house in the outskirts of Barnsley - a bit of a gastronomic desert otherwise - and serves modern British food with a slight touch of a European influence.

Robert does the cooking and everything is prepared on the premises including a good selection of breads, ice creams, sorbets and petits fours. The service is most professional, the waitresses wear white gloves, a charming old-fashioned touch, whilst being both welcoming and friendly.

He offers starters like tempura of monkfish with sweet chili sauce and crème fraiche or grilled chevre and parma ham salad served with roast peppers, basil oil and balsamic, followed possibly by roast chicken breast with spaghetti vegetables layered on red onion tarte tatin with red wine sauce; honey-glazed lamb shank served with baby vegetables and red-currant jus; or roast fillet of salmon served with stir-fried bok choi, ginger and soy

The Restaurant is non-smoking but there is an upstairs cocktail lounge where smoking is permitted. No children under nine years old.

Your Reviews of Armstrongs Restaurant

Neil (24 April 2007)

I have taken business guests to Armstrongs twice in the last two months. On the first visit we enjoyed an early starter meal that I believe cost £23 each and more lately on a Friday evening when the charge was £28 each. On both occasions my guests and I were all delighted with the food and considered it a step higher than other local restaurants. On the last visit my fillet steak described as beef fillet stroganoff was delightful; my guests agreed their duck and sea bass were equally delicious. Service was good on both occasions, house wine pleasant and reasonably priced. I strongly recommend a visit.

Nim (8 December 2006)

We were disappointed with our visit to Armstrongs. While the staff are young, they are friendly and welcoming, but are sadly let down by the food and the limited wine list (our first three choices were unavailable).

My starter was ok (NB chef - Pomme Puree is apple puree, not mashed potato), the "sorbet" we were then served tasted of neither raspberry nor champagne, and bore a startling resemblance to Calamine Lotion. My main course (Turkey Roularde - note spelling) was fine, but the accompanying stuffing had the texture and taste of Paxo, the sausages were obviously cheap, and the vegetables had been sitting around for a while as they had that slightly shrivelled look. Dessert was ok (Black Forest Arctic Roll) but the Macerated Cherries were actually Maraschino cherries - far too sickly and not in keeping (surely Black Forest should be Kirsch, not almond?)

The impression I got was that the Chef was seeking the easy way out, rather than putting in the effort I expect when paying £33 a head. We have, unfortunately, been spoiled by going to Rafters in Sheffield, where the food is always freshly prepared, top quality, and worth the (cheaper than Armstrongs) price. You also don't get asked repeatedly (we stopped counting after the 7th time) "is everything ok". Not worth the money in my opinion, sorry.
