Artillery Tower, The

Given its name, it's underlying military significance cannot be more emphasised, from its original function as one of the fortifications protecting the then 'City of Stonehouse' to its current role as a restaurant, The Artillery Tower has certainly withstood the test of time. Whilst enjoying view of Drakes Island and Mount Edgecombe, diners can also feast on some delectable British cooking based on local, seasonal ingredients.

Plated of seared scallops with belly pork and apple could arrive first, or a farmhouse terrine with toast and chutney, then a roast duck makes an appearance with spiced red cabbage and dauphinoise potatoes. The intrinsic flavour of a roast rump of lamb is complemented by the accompanying spiced aubergine and wild garlic mash, while salmon is teamed with saffron mash, fennel, gremolata and olive oil. Desserts have a classic note but are a sure delight; think crème brûlée with shortbread and vanilla cheesecake with lemon-curd ice cream.
