Ascot Oriental

As a native Chinese, frequenting many Oriental restaurants in and around London, I had read the reviews on the website and had very high expectations. The first dish we ordered was a stir fried squid with black bean sauce, a simple dish for any competent Chinese chef to prepare. When it came to the table, I was immediately struck by the small portion compared to any restaurant in London's Chinatown, given that the prices here are significantly higher. There was little squid to be seen and the rest of the dish comprised thickly cut peppers and onion, chopped in an unprofessional manner. We then tried a Thai dish, pah Thai gai Noodles. Again the portion was disappointingly meagre and from the taste, it was clear that this was not prepared by a Thai chef. The general feeling of poor value for money was compounded by the prices of drinks: £2.00 for a pot of tea. The ambience was pleasant, and the service friendly and efficient, but this was not the truly Oriental culinary experience the restaurant's name had led us to expect.

I have eaten here twice before and am going back for more in a few weeks. The food and atmosphere is excellent and I am very surprised to see a bad review!
