Ashoka - Ashton Lane

19 Ashton Lane, Glasgow, G12 8SJ

I doubt whether anybody knows how many Ashokas there are in Glasgow, not does it particularly matter, but I do have an affection for this one which featured quite regularly in my life for a time. Suffice to say that it continues to provide sustenance to formidable numbers of Glaswegians and others in a way that leaves you feeling rather as though they were expecting you, are even pleased that you came and took a genuine interest in what you thought you wanted to eat. To say it is my favourite Indian restaurant on Clydeside would be to exaggerate - that privilege is reserved for an establishment in Kilwinning which we will review another time - but it sure is very near the top and much of that is due to the staff.

Which is certainly not to overlook the food. Most of the traditional Indian dishes are present and I have known occasions when there have been those amongst us who have asked for a non-menu item and not gone empty away. Ashoka is the sort of curry house that will still be there in twenty years time doing a sound job and still smiling. I hope I will still be there to join them.
