ASK - Ashby De La Zouch

3 Derby Road, Ashby De La Zouch, LE65 2HF

For some time I made the mistake of thinking that no group of restaurants in the region of 200 locations could hope to maintain the quality for which I was looking. Then one day I decided to put my prejudices to the test, walked into Oxford Ask! and discovered that I could not have been more mistaken. Their claim to serve freshly prepared quality food in stylish and comfortable surroundings with friendly and efficient service proved to be absolutely spot on. Since then I have also discovered that a degree of consistency seems to operate throughout their restaurants, and that certainly does take some achieving, implying a degree of management that is enviable. They are perfect places for an impromptu snack, a bit of culinary grazing, or the full works, and families are catered for particularly well.

They are perfect places for an impromptu snack, a bit of culinary grazing, or the full works, and families are catered for particularly well.

Their trendy décor usually comprises tiled floors and black furniture with well set tables that sparkle with glass, silver and spotless linen. Ten starters include crostini and bruschetta, followed by a range of salads, pasta and al forno, oven baked pasta, some with chicken.

The pizzas are stone baked in the oven, creating a crisp, authentic and delicious flavour, and they all come topped with mozzarella and tomato. Calzone introduce a touch of opulence with a folded pizza baked in the oven and topped with garlic butter and melted grana padano, whilst inside expect to find chicken or a vegetarian mix.

Amongst the specials may I warmly, in every sense, recommend the polpette al forno, a popular Milanese dish of beef meatballs sautéed in garlic with fire roasted peppers, caramelised onions, chilli and pomodoro sauce, with penne pasta, topped with cheese and oven baked.

An enticing selection of desserts list banoffee pie and tiramisu amongst them, and the coffee tastes like coffee, which may sound banal, but I guess you know what I mean.

Thanks to a well selected wine list speculative drinking can offer handsome dividends, even with prices rarely crossing the £20 barrier.

REVIEWS OF ASK - Ashby De La Zouch

Obscure Thing (24 February 2011)

We were looking for somewhere to have a decent birthday lunch at quite a late hour of the day. A local pub refused us entry as it was almost 3 PM, so we headed back into Ashby and headed straight for Ask. I hadn't eaten in the Ashby branch before, and my friend, whose birthday it was, had never eaten in an Ask restaurant. He wasn't sure what to expect. We were both extremely impressed and pleased with both the service and the food.

We were able to choose our seating and the staff quickly prepared the table we had chosen despite it having just been used by someone else. The service was always provided with a genuine smile and waiters were enthusiastic and chatty but not overly so. My friend was given an extra measure in his drink when we mentioned it was his birthday, and we were cheerfully handed a '2-for-1' voucher by one of the waiters as a nice gesture. We had delicious olives and warm bread with olive oil whilst waiting for our food. This was a great appetiser, and cleanly and nicely presented. We chose to share between us the vegetable risotto and the vegetarian pizza, both of which were perfectly cooked and absolutely delicious. The green salad was a very good portion of freshly prepared leaves, peppers, cucumbers, olives etc. and olive oil and viniagrette is provided on the table. The service was fast, but not too quick - the staff clearly paid attention to whenever we were ready to order, eat, and finally pay. As a result of the kind offer of the voucher, the food was great value for money too.

I would happily eat in this branch of Ask on a regular basis. Definitely recommended for a lunchtime meal, although I can't vouch for the same great service on a busy evening. However, given the staff's great attitude and service, I would presume it is normally a pleasure to eat here. Good job guys.
