ASK - Haslemere

For some time I made the mistake of thinking that no group of restaurants in the region of 200 locations could hope to maintain the quality for which I was looking. Then one day I decided to put my prejudices to the test, walked into Oxford Ask! and discovered that I could not have been more mistaken. Their claim to serve freshly prepared quality food in stylish and comfortable surroundings with friendly and efficient service proved to be absolutely spot on. Since then I have also discovered that a degree of consistency seems to operate throughout their restaurants, and that certainly does take some achieving, implying a degree of management that is enviable. They are perfect places for an impromptu snack, a bit of culinary grazing, or the full works, and families are catered for particularly well. For some time I made the mistake of thinking that no group of restaurants in the region of 200 locations could hope to maintain the quality for which I was looking.

Their trendy décor usually comprises tiled floors and black furniture with well set tables that sparkle with glass, silver and spotless linen. Ten starters include crostini and bruschetta, followed by a range of salads, pasta and al forno, oven baked pasta, some with chicken.
The pizzas are stone baked in the oven, creating a crisp, authentic and delicious flavour, and they all come topped with mozzarella and tomato. Calzone introduce a touch of opulence with a folded pizza baked in the oven and topped with garlic butter and melted grana padano, whilst inside expect to find chicken or a vegetarian mix.
Amongst the specials may I warmly, in every sense, recommend the polpette al forno, a popular Milanese dish of beef meatballs sautéed in garlic with fire roasted peppers, caramelised onions, chilli and pomodoro sauce, with penne pasta, topped with cheese and oven baked.
An enticing selection of desserts list banoffee pie and tiramisu amongst them, and the coffee tastes like coffee, which may sound banal, but I guess you know what I mean.
Thanks to a well selected wine list speculative drinking can offer handsome dividends, even with prices rarely crossing the £20 barrier.

REVIEWS OF ASK - Haslemere
David C (17 January 2010)
I simply have to put up a review for Haslemere ASK, having read what I consider to be a very negative review made earlier and published here, and one that I think paints a very inaccurate picture of this restaurant. My wife, two children and I ate there last night. Haslemere has seen loads of snow the last 10 days, which had at last melted and it was as if the whole town had descended on the local restaurants as a way of getting out at last and celebrating. ASK was full, I'd say 70 or 80 people were there. While this gave the place a festive ambience I was worried it might mean slow service. However, I need not have worried. The serving staff were pleasant, we were quickly served with drinks and our main courses were served 10 minutes after we ordered them which was great considering how full the restaurant was. Unlike the previous two reviewers, we were very happy with the food. I have to say I don't quite get Lilian's complaint about a 1 edge crust round her pizza. That would be pretty normal - my pizza had a crust round it but that's no cause for dissatisfaction! The pizzas were well filled and tasty. Mine had a soft egg on top, and the reason I mention this is that in another popular pizza restaurant in town I have tried three times to get the egg done soft but it always comes overcooked and hard. ASK got it right first time. A minor thing I know but I give them points for it. I would say - don't be put off by the previous two reviews, one of which in particular makes me think the reviewer may not be entirely unbiased. ASK is a clean, attractive, modern place to eat, ideal for people with families and with a menu that has a good selection of pasta dishes as well as pizzas.

I was ASK summers again and found the staff to be off-hand. The food was okay but was on the light side considering the price. I am due to holiday in Haslemere again this year and will against my better judgement give them another go! What this space.
