Ate O Clock Description

Kenny Noble, one of York's well known chefs, opened Ate O Clock in September 2005 and in a span of a few years, turned it into a restaurant people love to visit. The refuge can be found nestling down an alley in the heart of York; step in and you'll discover a relaxing atmosphere made lively by eagles, clocks all set to 8 o'clock, and film sets in the toilets!

The service is considered to be a special feature - warm and personalised - making customers return to sample more of the Mediterranean cuisine. The chef uses local produce to create a range of mostly homemade food. You'll notice recognisable dishes with interesting variations but made to your liking.

The regularly changing menu could include starters of guinea fowl terrine, Thai spiced fishcake with tomato coulis, and seafood risotto, and mains of Yorkshire lamb loin with fondant potato and mint pesto, and sea bass fillet with salmon mousse.

Desserts take in chocolate pannacotta and lemon meringue mascarpone cheesecake. The wine list embraces numbers from around the world.

  • £15 (3 courses), early evening, Tues - Thurs

Your Reviews of Ate O Clock

S&K (26 May 2009)

We have just returned after spending the Bank Holiday weekend in York. Our trip was a memorable one made all the more special after our pre-booked meal at Ate O Clock on Saturday evening. The restaurant was reached down a small alleyway off the main drag of shops, whilst the alley was very quaint in the evening it looked a little tired in the day. The ambience as soon as you open the door to the restaurant and welcoming décor is perfect. We received a very warm welcome when we arrived and were shown to our table within 5 minutes although the restaurant was fully booked. The food couldn't be faulted and we both agreed is amongst the best tasted on our many trips away. The complementary bread, raspberry and black pepper, and small tureen of soup was a lovely touch. My husband also particularly liked the idea of his main course of beef cooked in 3 different styles. I had a chicken and mushroom dish which was perfect and we enjoyed the cheese soufflé to start. We had 2 bottles of wine, brandy and a coffee, which came with parkin cake, for just over £70 which shows, as well as being a great place to eat it's also good on price. We'll definitely go again to eat and have already started to tell our friends what a hidden gem it is.

I eat at Ate O Clock several times a year and the menu offers plenty of tantalising choices. There is always local produce and unsustainable cod has been removed from the menu to help with conservation. Yesterday the Valentine's weekend was extended to include Sunday. As ever we were not disappointed. Once you have ordered you are offered a choice of homemade flavoured bread. We both chose to eat dishes from the specials menu, which adds 3 or 4 choices to the 6 or 7 on the printed menu for both starter and mains. The tomato and herb bruschetta was delicious and the duck confit with oriental salad was also very good. Lamb shank and sirloin steak were both beautifully cooked and desserts were also good. We paid £67 for two including two individual glasses of wine. The service is friendly and Kenny steps out of the kitchen several times during the evening to see that his guests are happy, which doesn't happen in chain restaurants. It's a pleasure to recommend Ate O Clock.
