Wandering past all the eateries in Dulwich Village on a sunny February afternoon, we thought we'd try this cafe. Unfortunately it was disappointing. Despite it being lunch time, we were told there was only one soup portion left and when I asked them about the sandwiches they had, I was curtly told 'whatever's left in the fridge' behind me. We had prawn cocktail sandwiches and two bland chicken curry and jalapeno wraps. My wife's soup was watery and came with some stale bread and was practically dropped in her lap when it was served.

The one major thing that Au Ciel has going for it is that it stocks excellent cakes and patisseries, if you are in South East London and need a fabulous (and fabulously expensive) French style gateau for a special occasion then you need look no further.

Unfortunately it has very little else to recommend it, the tea room is distinctly lacking in ambiance, although they have a large and promising looking continental style espresso machine their coffee is dreadful acrid swill.

Add rude, surly and disinterested staff to the mix and you have all the makings of an experience that will definitely put a damper on any enjoyable afternoon.
