Aviary, The Description
The Aviary is a good quality, genuinely local restaurant, aiming to bring decent food (often organic, free-range and always local) to the area at very affordable prices. It is non-smoking, non-pretentious and friendly.
The menu changes frequently but could contain dishes like roasted butternut squash and mascarpone risotto or chicken liver parfait with confit garlic and shallots, parsley oil and balsamic to commence your meal with, followed by crisp battered haddock with pea purée and french fries; grilled gigot of lamb on white bean and chorizo ragout with gremalata and basil oil or sea bass with basil and citrus fruit salsa on crushed new potatoes.

The atmosphere was relaxed but had a lovely intimate feel. The set menus were surprisingly different and good quality. Food is very good value for money and beautifully presented. Will definitely return!

I had eaten there before and found it OK, but this time the food was poor. I sent back my burnt potato rosti to be told that the chef says this is how it should be. Why can't restaurants admit their mistakes? I asked the patronising waitress (and chef in earshot) if rosti was supposed to be black and taste of charcoal. I won't be hurrying back - there are enough other places to eat.
