Babur Brasserie

119 Brockley Rise, London, SE23 1JP

Nestled between Ladywell and Foresthill is an Indian restaurant that's worth a visit even if it means travelling all the way from central London. Babur Brasserie has been in existence for more than a couple of decades and has gained the justifiable reputation of being one of the best Indian restaurants in and around London. The décor is what you might expect with loud red velvet seats, white table cloths and ethnic art work. The sitar music in the background sets the mood for an authentic experience. The extensive list of wines from around the world will lay to rest any pre-conceived notions you might have about the compatibility between Indian cuisine and wine. Once you've selected your wine, begin with the Bengali beetroot cutlets or go for the Mughal style saffron marinated king prawns.

For the mains try the chicken biryani cooked in Chettinad style and conclude with the bread and butter pudding if you want to play safe or go for the beetroot samosa or rasamalai if you're feeling adventurous. The great service and reasonable prices at Babur make your journey, however short or long, completely worth it.

REVIEWS OF Babur Brasserie

Mr Lee (31 October 2007)

The food at the Babur was amazingly subtle, tasty and varied. Not only that, it looks and feels like a classy West End restaurant. They had an amazing wine list but one of them from our party swore blind that you could not have wine with Indian food so we asked her to request the waiter to make recommendations. She was gobsmacked and we were all pleasantly surprised to discover how each wine complemented the dishes.

Mrs B. Ovill (26 April 2007)

I can't believe that anyone could ever think the portions at the Babur are small! We've been eating there for years and have never left feeling anything less than comfortably full, and I can assure you we know how to eat. The food is fantastic and the portions are perfect and authentic for each individual dish. Maybe the supersize ethos is to blame?
