Baltic Fleet

33 Wapping, Liverpool, L1 8DQ

I don't know about you, but in amongst all the good meals, fashionable restaurants and what might loosely be termed the upper middle end of the restaurant trade, every so often I like to go for a bit of local colour. Increasingly difficult to find, once located they need to be cherished and returned to for irregular inspection, and very occasionally special chums can be introduced. Of such an ilk is The Baltic Fleet, on the waterside in seriously maritime Liverpool, and even shaped like a ship. Furthermore, at what landlubbers refer to as "the sharp end" there is a micro-brewery producing some very creditable ales, including one called Wapping Bitter. Around 40 bottled beers from an international cast bring delight to connoisseurs of such matters.

It is one of those places where drinking takes preference over eating, a refreshing attitude, but after all the point from which pubs started. This is not to say you cannot eat there, but don't try it on during the evening. Lunch on weekdays is ok, and brunch is served until 4pm at weekends. At lunchtime keep an eye open for souse, the local stew served with bread and red cabbage. For the thoroughly decadent pinches of snuff are to be had.

REVIEWS OF Baltic Fleet

Glyn (2 September 2010)

Food excellent and reasonably priced, especially when compared with the rip off tourist prices just up the road. I opted for the scouse- a real rib sticker of a meal, my wife had the lasagna and was very pleased. Beer is still brewed on site and still wonderful, and now even more choice; as well as the award winning wapping ales you can also try beers from the stunning new Liverpool one brewery, and also ones from the Brimstage brewery on the Wirral Peninsula when available. Brand new loos are now up the stairs; and downstairs were the old facilities once were, you can view the brewery through a perspex window. The staff are friendly and helpful, and happy to oblige in giving directions, or phoning a cab for you, should you need one. This place is a must if you want to go slightly off the tourist piste in Liverpool. I went there on a Wednesday, but I believe they are open at 10AM for traditional breakfast on Saturday and Sunday. Had I been able to linger, they also advertise live music on Wednesday evenings, we unfortunately had a train to catch.

We dropped in to the Baltic Fleet on Saturday for a quick drink, not intending to eat. We drank our way through the beers and ales, it was fantastic, and then decided to try scouse and crusty bread. Wow! I make good scouse but this blew us all away. Terrific food, ale, atmosphere and very friendly staff - will be back very soon. Thanks guys.
