Barrasford Arms Description
Chef Tony Binks took over this 1870s pub in 2006. Already voted "Destination Restaurant of the Year", the pub sits at the heart of Barrasford village in the North Tyne valley. Tony's cooking style is traditionally English with French influences, this is a homage to his friend and mentor, international renowned chef Albert Roux, who pays the occasional visit.
Tony and his young team serve quality standard Northumbrian beef and lamb, seasonal game, fish from the North Sea, local cheeses and stunning homemade desserts, accompanied by an excellent selection of modestly priced wines.
Tony Binks introduced the monthly Ladies Luncheon Club at the Barrasford Arms in November '06 to loud applause, and ever since it has been a hugely popular social event. Guests arrive to warm pastries and coffee, followed by a cookery demonstration, then the meal is accompanied by a glass of wine.
Tony started his bi-monthly Gourmet Dinners to show off the very best of regional, seasonal dishes through a five course, varied dinner menu. There is no doubt that he has made quite an impact on dining out in the Tyne Valley in a comparatively short time.

I have found a real gem. The restaurant was cosy, with a beautiful open fire, and the bar full of friendly locals. The twice baked cheddar soufflé was to die for and the sticky pistachio meringue with poached rhubarb, just fantastic. To top it all, we were served by friendly and helpful staff. What more could you ask for?

It was a rather chilly restaurant room at lunch time, despite the log fire, which certainly gave a no-frills impression. The main course was beautifully presented, but my fish fillet was a little over-cooked and dry, and the quantity was not terribly generous. Dessert was also nice to look at, and my pudding with warm, melted chocolate middle was rich and delicious tasting. Homemade milk chocolates rolled in icing sugar served with coffee at the end were a nice touch, but plain chocolate might have been more welcome to the palate at this stage of the meal. All in all, the food was good, but perhaps more attention to ambience is needed to make it more of a welcoming experience.
