Baumanns Brasserie
4-6 Stoneham Street, Coggeshall, CO6 1TT
Just when you thought celebrity chefs owned high-end, deluxe dining spots, Mark Baumann steps in like a whiff of fresh air. Scuttling between TV shoots and cooking for the patrons in his brasserie at Stoneham Street is no mean feat; here's one person with copious amounts of passion for promoting the bountiful produce that Essex has on offer. The menu explores brasserie territory with starters of apple, cider and smoky bacon salad, langoustine tempura, and basil egg mayonnaise with Bayonne ham crackling and avocado oil. In between congratulate yourself with a glass of Kir Royale sorbet or Trou Normand. The strength of main courses lie in the variety on offer here, from star anise braised pig cheeks and seared rib eye of beef, to fillet of venison Wellington and pomegranate marinated Devon duck.Just when you thought celebrity chefs owned high-end, deluxe dining spots, Mark Baumann steps in like a whiff of fresh air. Lemongrass and lavender honey bring a textural thrill to an otherwise straightforward pannacotta or get boozy with a British trifle with cranberry and milk chocolate cookie.

REVIEWS OF Baumanns Brasserie
Rob Smith (2 August 2009)
We had a table for four on Saturday evening. The welcome was warm and we were promptly shown to our table. There was a comfortable, casual dining atmosphere and the staff quickly asked for drinks orders and supplied the menu and wine list. The service was very good with our needs met, but never intrusive. The starters my companions had were by all accounts good although my apple, cider and bacon salad was really a mass of confusing flavours and I think it would be better if the ingredients were not massed together into one confusing mass. The main courses were well presented and of high quality although why serve croquette potatoes with rib eye steak? The vegetable style of service, in a bowl, was disappointing and I would have expected a plated meal with the potato and vegetables complementing the meat as you tend to get in more upmarket restaurants nowadays. My pannacotta for dessert was just right and an enjoyable conclusion to the meal. The Macon Village at £20 a bottle was excellent, if you like white Burgundy, I would highly recommend it. Overall a good dining experience and we will return.

We took some friends for a special meal there and at £45 per head we were disappointed. The ‘fresh’ apple juice we saw was tipped from a carton clearly marked as concentrated. The fish portions were small and it was improved upon after complaint. We also expected seasonal vegetables at least on the menu i.e. asparagus, especially, being practically next door to asparagus fields, but again were disappointed with diced carrots and courgettes and one bowl of potatoes for six people. Desserts were much better. As we were still so hungry we ordered a cheese board for dessert - nice cheese but again very small portions. We eat out a lot and realise portions should be balanced so you can manage a starter, main, and dessert; but even my wife who weighs less said she could have eaten it twice over. The food was generally nice, but definitely gone down hill since our last visit there about five years ago. Overall, it’s okay for a lunch out but not a special evening meal. We waited an hour for our starters to arrive.
