Bay Restaurant, The Description

Those who remember the Waterhead in a previous incarnation may well do a double take on arriving at the transformation that is now Lakeland's first townhouse hotel. Formerly a two-star Victorian hotel, whilst the outward traditional charm has been retained, the interior now meets the demands of those looking for sophistication amidst the rustic charms of the Lake District, with Windermere in mind.

The dining room is home to a classic cuisine with a lively modern tendency, and a far cry in decor from the sometimes rather gloomy caverns associated with Victorian grandeur. Local ingredients feature strongly and could include Grizedale venison with raspberries and apricots, and baked turbot with fennel and green salsa.

Hearty eating is synonymous with the Lakes and the desserts maintain that tradition. Service draws from most age-groups, and is uniformly good. For those who find the transition from an urban locale to bucolic splendour a trifle taxing, this is the place to be.
