Bell Inn & Hill House Description
Much of what can be seen today of the Bell was in place by the time the Tudors came to the throne in 1445. With a long history as a coaching inn it is as popular now as it has always been and you have to move a good deal faster than a stage coach to be sure of a table.
The menu is not large but what there is commands respect and many repeat visits by those in the know. Start with the roast bacon knuckle served with seared scallop and beetroot, a challenging combination of flavours. Follow with the roast quail accompanied by black pudding and girolles. An enterprising choice of vegetables is always available and just to demonstrate there's no malarkey about dieting you can, if you wish, order fat chips with mayonnaise.
To conclude, many would find it difficult to avoid the marzipan and frangipane tart with vanilla rice and raspberry Chantilly, though in truth the choice of cheeses is seductive to breaking point. A lively little wine list which should meet most tastes.

Your Reviews of Bell Inn & Hill House
The Pitz (6 August 2007)
My wife and I have been going to the Bell for years and it never disappoints. The reasonably priced menu can sometimes challenge, but fortune favours the brave.
The memory of pigeon breast on haggis mash that I ordered about seven years ago still stays with me as one of the best meals I've ever had and if you see lemon tart on the dessert menu grab it with both hands. Make sure you book early or take a chance of getting a table in the bar, it is well worth a journey. Oh, and don't be put off by the hot cross buns they're not on the menu!
Patrick M. Bowler (27 April 2007)
Stupidly I have lived in the area over thirty years and only just recently visited the Bell. I can honestly say that though the range of the menu is small the quality is exquisite. I have eaten rib of beef before but this was the most impressive meal I have eaten this year. It was presented in a most professional manner by staff, who were attentive but not overbearing. Will I return? Yes, not just for special occasions but simply because the food is that good.
