Berlioz at The Burlington Hotel

I stayed at the Burlington Hotel recently and dined at the Berlioz Restaurant, which is a part of this Victorian hotel and is open to non-residents. I have to say I found the ambience and staff very friendly and the menu, an excellent mixture of tastes and combinations. Whilst Berlioz is part of a four star hotel, I did not find it stuffy and loved watching the shoppers on New Street, with my partner. I would recommend the food here to any of my friends and we will be going back to stay and eat there again.

We went to the Berlioz Bar, as opposed to the restaurant, for a light bite prior to a wine-tasting being held at the hotel. The food we received was very poor and gave the impression of being bought-in and either assembled or re-heated in the kitchen. A Tuscan calzone-style hot sandwich (£9.95) arrived as a hard, over-dry bread shell encasing a limp slice of cheese and one of ham. The carrot and ginger soup tasted of neither main ingredient and was simply a slightly gelatinous hot liquid. We complained, but the waiter merely apologised. A shortage of time meant that we took the matter no further. We will not visit the Bar again, and as a result of this experience we have doubts about the restaurant.
