Big Mussel - Quayside
15 The Side, Newcastle Quayside, Newcastle-upon-Tyne, NE1 3JE
Your first instinct when entering the Big Mussel may well be confusion at the off kilter décor - do not be fooled! Once you get beyond the porch you find yourself in a functional restaurant you will itch to return to. Obviously the main selling point is the mussels which are sold by the Kilo, in a decent variety of styles. If you go beyond the mussels, you will find a fine selection of seafood. Non fish dishes are available, and of good quality, but to choose one of these would be to miss the great offerings available. The menu changes frequently and the meals are simple enough to let the good ingredients shine through. The portions are on the large size, so don't over do the side orders! They offer a range of quality beers which complement the mussels superbly.Your first instinct when entering the Big Mussel may well be confusion at the off kilter décor - do not be fooled! Various discounts are available for lunches and early dinners, and unlike many such offers, there is a variety of options. It is a sensibly priced and well realised seafood restaurant the like of which is hard to find elsewhere.

REVIEWS OF Big Mussel - Quayside
DiagnosticArthur (12 January 2012)
My colleague and I ate there this week. The staff put themselves out to please and were extremely attentive. I had mussels and my colleague had the fish pie, we both were very happy with the meal and at £30 with a starter was it was very reasonable. The previous night as we walked passed there was the most wonderful salsa/reggae music playing and on the night there was a good live guitar singer playing.
If you are visiting Newcastle and enjoy a not so fussy restrauant with good food along with open to view kitchen- this is most certainly the one to go for.

I have just been there this weekend. The decor, I thought was wonderful and kitschy and the fact you can see into the kitchen is an extra bonus for me as I like to be nosey. The music was loud but not overbearing, and the waitresses were very friendly and seemed to be rushed off their feet but always cheerful. I'm not a massive fan of seafood but the other half is and he said he had heard the steak was really nice from here. In an odd twist he got the steak, which he said was lovely, and I had the seared tuna accompanied by cumin flavoured chickpeas and spinach. It was to die for, possibly the nicest meal I have in a while. I would definitely recommend this restaurant, it is fabulous. Word of warning though, if you order the potato skin starter expecting the usual scooped out potato skins filled with cheese etc, you are wrong, they are literally fried potato skins with dipping sauce. Nice, but not what we were expecting.
