Bigos Description
Should you wonder how a Polish restaurant can justify opening up in Scotland's capital city, rest assured that there are reputed to be some twenty thousand Polish workers who have arrived in Scotland in the last two years with the intention of honing the Scottish economy and their own wellbeing.
The culinary aspirations which they bring with them must feel comfortable there too, since nobody would accuse the Scots of being light on the carbohydrates. With bread and sausages high on the list of Polish preferred items, say no more. Indeed bigos is a favourite Polish dish of smoked sausage and cabbage. Flaki, boczek and barszcz are also to be seen in the more socially aware delis.
What can be said in favour of Polish cuisine is that whilst it may not always look great, it is certainly filling and nourishing, though beetroot broth, often drunk in a mug as in tea, must take some getting used to.
The other thing about Bigos - the restaurant - is its prices, which are phenomenally low. With dinner costing around £10 can you really afford not to at least give it a try?
But do not expect a licence.
Fixed Lunch
- £5.95 (3 courses), 12:00 - 15:30
Your Reviews of Bigos
Agnieszka (21 May 2008)
I read a bad review on another website and was surprised by how the author made it clear she hated Polish cuisine after having visited Bigos. However, I feel Bigos is not really the best ambassador of Polish food. I am Polish and I know what I'm talking about. They do serve traditional Polish dishes, but unfortunately they are not made in the best way. I'm not a professional chef, but I think I could prepare them much better. It's a pity though that Scottish people don't really have a possibility to try good Polish food here in Edinburgh. I suggest if you want to taste some truly delicious Polish dishes you should simply go to Poland or visit Cracow and go to any traditional Polish restaurant there.

It was excellent, no frills, genuine Polish cafe/restaurant. The pleasant atmosphere was enhanced by the quiet, friendly staff. The lack of a drinks licence is not a problem as the proprietor allows you to bring your own alcohol and there are two Polish delis nearby where you can purchase Lech, Zywiec, Tyskie and numerous vodkas and wines etc., I for one will be returning, often.
