Bird on the Rock Tearoom Description

If you thought that the latest trends in the restaurant industry are signalling the end of many small yet much loved dining venues and bringing good news for the larger ones, you might not be wrong. However, things are a little different in Rock Cottage, Clungunford, where a tearoom called Bird on the Rock is going as strong as ever.

Owned and run by Doug and Annabel Hawkes and located in a 17th century former alehouse, the tearoom gives visitors a chance to sip tea from pretty blue and white china cups while listening to dance band music from the 1930s.

Close to fifty rare and award winning teas are selected from all around the world. Choices range from blends such as Russian caravan and Nilgiri, to Old English Fruits and the strong old-fashioned Shropshire blend. For those who avoid the tempting teas there is ginger beer. Choose from a delightful range of home-baked sandwiches, apple, banana and cinnamon scones or fresh cakes.

Bird on the Rock Tearoom organises tea tasting events and sells chutneys, teas and gifts.

Your Reviews of Bird on the Rock Tearoom

Richard Oliver (2 November 2008)

Have you ever been taken by surprise? Well this tea room will do just that. It is set in the past with a theme of the pre war era and the food is to die for. I say this in all truthfulness; I have never been to a better tea room. Everything was just perfect. The cakes, tea and service with the theme of the 1920-30's made me feel I was back in a time when life was a lot slower, and I would then not be able to enjoy such luxuries; having to probably serve than be served. The car park is small and you may find walking, or by bike the ideal solution in summer but well worth the effort. Visit the place and I promise you will be glad you did.

Pete Ryecroft (31 August 2008)

This is the finest tearoom in England. And yes, I have probably visited all the tearooms in England. It’s worth a significant detour.
