The weather from out of the Solent would have to be very inclement to prevent you from seeing Montparnasse as you reel off Southsea Common into Palmerston Road, as its black exterior rather stands in the company that it keeps. Cuisine is fairly typical and flights of fancy are not the order of the day. Montparnasse does two or three course dinners at £31.50 and £36.50 respectively. A three course job might start with smoked chicken and leek terrine, served with prune and Earl Grey syrup, an original combination to most peoples' minds. I would take a chance on the griddled King prawns served with Cajun spices being worth the £1.75 supplement. I've been coming here for years. The food is amazing and the menu is constantly changing. The owner is friendly and very knowledgeable about the food and wine without being stuffy. The place has a lovely cozy ambience. I highly recommend it for a special occasion.

My wife, I and the family have eaten there four or five times over the last five years and every time it has been a delight. Great food and service and a reassuring consistency of quality that make it well worth the extra few pounds that you will spend. I can’t recommend it highly enough. Gourmet nights are well worth a try and good value.
