Bistro Scena
24 Rodney Road, Cheltenham, GL50 1JJ
Perched between the Everyman and Playhouse Theatres, Svea Cafe and Restaurang has achieved its mission of bringing homemade Swedish food to Cheltenham. The minimalist menu eschews the concept of starters and mains so the notion of a one-dish meal is to the fore. To assist the notion there is frölunda, meatballs and cream sauce with mashed potatoes and lingonberry jam, and luleå, whole trout filled with mushrooms and white wine sauce. Smörgåsbord, the famous Swedish buffet is available on the first Saturday of every month featuring herring, gravad lax, meatballs, sausages from Falun, and egg halves with caviar, new potatoes, beetroot salad and more. The princess cake is a house speciality filled with whipped cream and jam, surrounded by a light green marzipan exterior and dusted with confectioner's sugar.Perched between the Everyman and Playhouse Theatres, Svea Cafe and Restaurang has achieved its mission of bringing homemade Swedish food to Cheltenham. REVIEWS OF Bistro Scena
Valentine's Day Diner (21 February 2010)
Due in part to ignorance and perhaps to the portrayal of Swedish cuisine in the muppets, I'd never visited Svea Cafe until Valentine's Day this year. The food was excellent and the atmosphere was just perfect. The staff were, very hospitable and the decor and ambience made for a relaxed and enjoyable evening. I was also impressed by the selection offered on the regular menu and resolved to visit again soon. The restaurant offers something different to the proliferation of Indian and Italian restaurants in Cheltenham and is an asset to the town which deserves support. If, like me, you have dismissed Svea Café and Swedish cuisine in general, take another look and give it a try. I don't think you'll be disappointed. In fact I think you might be pleasantly surprised.
Ursula (27 July 2009)
If there was ever a restaurant which proved that Swedish food is not just about herrings, this is it. From simple Scandinavian open sandwiches to beautifully cooked meat, fish and vegetarian meals, not to mention wonderful cakes and desserts, everything there is home-cooked and truly delicious. If you feel like trying a bit of everything, go to the smorgasbord evening on the first Saturday of each month and sample a real Swedish buffet. You'll go back for more!
