Blue Bicycle Restaurant, The Description

Romantically housed in a former house of ill repute this star amongst the angels, however fallen, in York, now offers predominantly good quality seafood, with additions. There are suggestions that performance is a trifle irregular, but in general support still seems to be good. The mix of French and English dishes is impressive and local support, the best sort, holds firm even if there are a few rumbles about cost.

No children under 12 years.

Your Reviews of Blue Bicycle Restaurant, The

Jason R (16 November 2007)

The reviews we had read elsewhere made us look forward to our anniversary meal at the Blue Bicycle. All I can say is, did we miss something? Or are the people of York all being conned into thinking they've had a good meal because of the price and posh, over-complicated menu? Our meal was warm, the service was pleasant but slow, the steak was abysmal and the overall value was terrible in relation to most other restaurants. The size of the fish suggested quality - but the chef was lacking and failed to deliver fish with flavours. It was all the more surprising given the complex array of ingredients thrown together for each dish. Overall: Nothing done well. It was a let down. And we're not tight-wads or southerners harping either - just simple Lancastrians used to eating well. The atmosphere and tapas we had the night before in La Tasca was infinitely better.

I dined at the Blue Bicycle on Wednesday evening 29th June 2005. I live in London and was astonished at the prices. Around £10 for a starter and £19 for the main course which did not include vegetables.

I had the steak pie and mash starter and bread and butter pudding for dessert which were absolutely delicious. I was not hungry enough to eat a main course as well but the food that the rest of my party ordered certainly looked pretty good. The house wine at £13 a bottle was reasonable compared to other restaurants and when the kitchen made a mistake and brought the wrong order they gave us a complimentary bottle.

I think I would like to visit there again in a smaller group to get a better opinion of the restaurant.

I went to Bettys the following day and that was a lovely experience too - just different.
