Bluebell Country Inn, The

Main Street, Alne, York, YO61 1RR

Here is yet another of those cosy Yorkshire inns that tend to prove right the general supposition that the county is more than ordinarily well provided for in this respect. The Bluebell has the added attraction that the value for money is incredibly good, and whilst Yorkshire may be the county of 'brass' it is so largely because they are not only good at earning it, they can also use it pretty wisely. The place is awash with reminders of the inn's antiquity, and you eat in comfortable and homely surroundings, be it in the bar or the dining room. An early meal menu offers starters of deep fried whitebait, followed by lamb and vegetable hotpot or steak and mushroom pie, about six choices per course, before a highly enjoyable lemon and ginger crunch.

An early meal menu offers starters of deep fried whitebait, followed by lamb and vegetable hotpot or steak and mushroom pie, about six choices per course, before a highly enjoyable lemon and ginger crunch. Three courses for £12 - 'nuff said.

Their main menu, which corresponds to an à la carte, carries a good selection in each course, with starters of a black pudding tower served with raspberry and whole grain mustard, or a warm bacon salad with a mild sweet chilli dressing. Main courses serve a choice of pies, twice roasted half duckling, and a char grilled lamb fillet Rossini.

The sea is never far away, with tray baked whole lemon sole, lobster thermidor, and Thai salmon making regular appearances. Puddings include a delicious summer fruit pudding, lemon and lime delice, and a cheese board complete with glass of port.

Hardly surprising that people make extensive detours to avail themselves of this highly commendable watering hole.
