Blueprint Cafe Description

blueprint cafe d&d londonOn the first floor of the Design Museum, the Blueprint Café was the first restaurant in the Butlers Wharf Gastrodrome. It has stunning views from the City of London along the Thames to Canary Wharf. The floor to ceiling windows and light wooden floors create a light and airy space in which to enjoy Jeremy Lee's fantastic cooking and the knowledgeable and courteous service.

Events, weddings, conferences and other such functions can be held in this relaxed riverside venue and when the weather is good, the glass doors can be opened to create a stylish al fresco mood. A large rooftop summer terrace provides spectacular views and can be hired for canapé and barbeque receptions while they also cater for events held in the Design Museum where they are located.

Head Chef Jeremy Lee is renowned for his eclectic style of cooking - taking influences from his native Scotland as well as Europe and North Africa. His menu changes daily depending on what is good that's in season.

The food scene is well set by his starters, offering a positive rainbow of choices, at one of the spectrum a spinach, chard and courgette soup; at the other crab cakes with mayonnaise or squid, samphire and peas and in between an imaginative salad of beetroot, a boiled egg, mustard, horseradish.

Follow that Jeremy! Fortunately he does that very successfully with piscatorial delights like poached skate, tartare sauce and watercress or whole grilled bream with lemon and olive oil while there is general applause for his roast lamb chops with girolles and beans.

He is equally accomplished with his desserts, which might feature a traditional, but not the way he does it, trifle, made with blackcurrants, and, in the pastry department, almond cake with peach and blueberries or a raspberry shortcake with vanilla cream.

A leisurely Sunday lunch is one of the indulgences that no one wants to miss, particularly when tempted by dishes such as smoked eel sandwich with red onion pickle or a more substantial baked lamb with mustard and parsley crust. The day becomes more enjoyable when lunch is brought to an end by a delightful Eton mess or maybe some of the cheeses on offer.

The Blueprint Café brings an elegant mix of European wines and New World discoveries with quite a few choices available by the glass. There is plenty of information on their comprehensive Website, such as offers and seasonal menu changes.

Your Reviews of Blueprint Cafe

Josy (17 October 2007)

We went there for my husband's birthday after receiving vouchers for a two course meal. The view is impressive and the cafe is located in a great area, right next to Tower Bridge. When we arrived we ordered a mojito and a gin and tonic. The waitress looked at me blankly and repeated mojito, but took the order and left the table. What returned was some kind of rum based drink with no mint or sugar, clearly not a mojito. Nevertheless, I drank it, though in hindsight should've complained then.

The starters were the highlight of the meal, the chicken liver pate was served with toasted bread, which was nice but nothing special and the salsify was coated delicately with parmesan, the highlight of the meal. The vegetarian main was polenta, I chose it because there were only three choices, and I didn't want fish, artichoke and goats’ cheese. It was quite bland and needed something like pesto to give it life. The beef main, which my husband had, was delicious and tender, if not too salty.

In such a great environment and considering we were early and it was not that busy, I would've expected better service. We also ordered dessert - the crème brulee came out with the top quite burnt, however the lemon dessert was delicious and creamy. Would I recommend it? Probably not due to me not thinking that we got value for money .And if they serve cocktails they should at least know what a mojito is. Mainly we found the waitress unwilling to please or help and didn't seem to be able to answer any questions about the menu.
