Bob Bob Ricard

1 Upper James Street, London, W1F 9DF

Bob Bob Ricard, or BBR, is a restaurant and bar over two floors, designed by David Collins that opened in late 2008 at Golden Square, Soho. The venue nurtures a contemporary feel typical of its surrounding neighbourhood whilst celebrating nostalgic glamour in both appearance and detail. The retro-leaning menu, created by Head Chef James Walker takes many classic British staples and gives them a modern interpretation. The offerings are so expansive that choices range from grilled lobster and chips to Kellogg's cornflakes - and much in between. The inclusive diner style booth seating is offset with lavish extravagance - chandeliers, mirrors, marble - and eccentric touches, including champagne buttons at every table, which, when pressed, summon a champagne trolley.

REVIEWS OF Bob Bob Ricard

Fi (26 November 2008)

I had dinner with friends at the Bob Bob Ricard last night and it was terrific. The atmosphere was buzzy with great cocktails, and everyone enjoyed their meal from the beef tea, which was served in a teapot, to a very good burger or lighter salmon option. The puddings hit the spot too with jellies, cakes, and soufflés. It also looks lovely, like an old railway carriage, but in cool turquoise blue booths and a bar opening soon. A lot of attention has been given to detail, with smiling helpful members of staff. We will be back soon.

N (19 November 2008)

This is a refreshingly different take on British comfort food. The space itself has undergone a huge refurbishment and is glorious. It feels terribly glamorous and cool. The menu is varied and interesting with something for everyone. The desserts rock; choose from pavlovas, soufflés, jellies, rice pudding and the wondrous knickerbocker glory, which arrived complete with tall glass, long spoon and hundreds and thousands. It was delicious, and was a real trip back to my childhood. They appear to serve the whole menu all day so you can have a full English mid afternoon if you wish. The afternoon tea looked good too and I'll be back for this. Apparently they bring toasters to your table for the crumpets and tea cakes. The service was friendly and relaxed, but professional with a very buzzy atmosphere. I was thrilled to be able to order vintage champagne by the glass; what a treat! There is a call button at every table, which lights up your table number above the bar. When up and running properly from 24th November there will apparently be a 'champagne trolley', which will arrive for you to make your selection. It all seems marvellous and bonkers at the same time. I am looking forward to returning. I advise getting in as soon as possible, as the central Soho location will mean it will soon become the eating establishment of choice for the cool media set, and mere mortals might struggle to get in. Hoping this might become a firm favourite.
