If you extol the virtue of a restaurant's ability to transcend culinary boundaries, then head to Old Street in London and join plenty of others diners in watching the marriage of flavours and techniques at Bogayo. The interior has a decidedly Moroccan feel to it with hookah pipes, ornamental lamps and muted lighting.

The dinner menu kicks off with aubergine caviar cooked in a rich herb tomato sauce and pita bread, and thyme stuffed grilled marinated sardines. Main courses stay true to the original tagine formula with fish, chicken, lamb and kofta versions that are worth seeking out. Pan-roasted venison and grilled Scottish rib eye steak touch familiar territory and among desserts keep an eye open for cointreau and orange chocolate tart and sticky toffee pudding with fudge sauce and crème fraîche.

The Bogayo team believe that chosen entertainment is an essential part of dining out, and belly dancers do their bit on Friday and Saturday evenings.
