Brackenrigg Inn Description

An old coaching inn on the road between Penrith and Ambleside, this typical Lakeland small hotel has stirring views over the lower reaches of Ullswater to the High Street range of hills. The menu is quite extensive and includes familiar items to be found in a restaurant where English cooking predominates.

The game terrine, served with Cumberland sauce, is accompanied by a grape and walnut salad and a warm brioche. When the soup of the day slips below the £2.50 mark - £2.25 in this case - you can be sure that there's good value around, though the warm mussel and leek tart is not far behind.

On the assumption you may have been pounding the fells and have developed the appetite of a starving lion cub you could easily be tempted by the grilled fillet of beef, topped with a smoked Cumberland rarebit, accompanied by roasted shallots and a deliciously creamy Dijon mustard sauce. Expect too, to find the local Watermillock sausages on the menu.

Across the water Sharrow Bay, spiritual home of sticky toffee pudding, slips into the shades as the setting sun dips behind Helvellyn - what could be a more appropriate way to finish? Brackenrigg presents some of the best value to be found in the area.

Visitor (31 October 2008)

They are very friendly and the food tastes very good too. The cheese is also excellent. However, the wait of around an hour for food really was unacceptable despite our reminders on three consecutive nights. There were other customers who were also suffering like us. Also our first four choices from the menu were not available on our first night. The rack of lamb contained only three chops yet it cost over £19. We recommend you eat from the cheaper bar menu. They also ran out of real ale last night. Come on Brackenrigg, sort out the timing and you could be great.

S Burnett (29 September 2008)

They stated that the room was refurbished but it was very disappointing. This was an ensuite room, which was very small with a small handbasin and no room to dry after showering without stepping into the bedroom. The evening meal was booked for 7pm and we had only two courses but were not served the second course until 8.50pm. We gave up on the dessert and didn't wait for the cooked breakfast the following day as other guests said they had waited one hour the previous day. We didn't eat there the second night. The trip was a birthday treat but all in all, a very poor experience and not up to description given on their website.
