Brasserie at Pennyhill Park Hotel, The Description

Set in 120 acres of parkland and superbly located for many of Southern England's most important and popular attractions - such as horse racing at Ascot, golf at Wentworth. Windsor Castle and Great Park a mere stone's throw away, rugby at Twickenham, and London a 45 minute drive - this majestic Surrey Hotel also boasts a very flexible approach with their St James restaurant.

At lunchtime it offers a Buffet/Carvery, presenting excellent value at £18.95 from Monday to Saturday, but slightly more at £30 on Sunday, however, this does include Live Jazz.

On a Sunday you could feast on a choice of: assorted smoked and cured fish with horseradish cream; asparagus parma ham with mozzarella salad; flaked salmon nicoise or a trio of melon with assorted berries and seasonal fruits to begin with.

Followed by classics such as: roast sirloin of beef red wine jus and Yorkshire puddings; roast loin of pork calvados sauce or baked fillets of lemon sole with a basil and herb crust saffron pomme ecrasse with a selection of seasonal vegetables and potatoes.

Finishing with: home-made apple and blackberry pie with clotted cream; lemon tart with lime cream; seasonal fruit berry tart; fresh seasonal fruit salad; banoffee pie or a selection of French and English cheeses.

In the evening it offers an 'a la carte' menu, ranging from dishes like kedgeree with poached egg or cous cous stuffed squid with basil oil, through pastas and salads such as spaghetti, red pepper pesto, crème fraiche and spring onion or flaked pepper salmon salad with lemon mayonnaise, through to mains of guinea fowl, wild mushroom risotto, roasted grapes or monkfish, chilli and ginger rosti, bok choi and oriental sauce vierge.

A meal could be as little as £15 a head, or £40, depending on how you choose; but either way it should prove a memorable experience.

Your Reviews of Brasserie at Pennyhill Park Hotel, The

Marcie D. Terman (21 May 2004)

Your expectations rise as you walk through the gallery of marble floored rooms as you walk towards the St. James. Your tummy rumbling because you have forgone breakfast in expectation of what is going to come.

At the door you are greeted and shown to tables featuring baronial chairs. FYI if you get up during the meal and plop your napkin on the floor or chair or place setting, upon your return it is magically folded over the arm of the chair. A very nice touch.

We have found that the quality of the buffet is directly proportional to the number of expected guests for lunch. A low turn out day will find the fish selection laced with surami and teensy prawns, a mothering Sunday and the [oxymoron] giant shrimp emerge. But whenever you plan to visit, be prepared to be delighted by the tasteful array of cold salads and desserts.

The main course is from a carvery with the choice of three meats, a fish and a vegetarian selection. They will also serve a nice choice of vegetable side dishes that are perky and crisp, as opposed to the wilted and repulsive you would expect from something sitting on a steam table. Espresso good, coffee fair, wine list [don’t know, don’t drink wine in the middle of a Sunday afternoon] They replenish your bread dish if you wish. The staff is helpful, but frequently forgetful or just plain slow.

Oh yes! There is a Jazz combo that is amusing if a little loud. They do a turn of the room taking requests, and from the number of Happy Birthdays played, you know why people come to this restaurant.

Be prepared to walk off your lunch in clement weather with a walk on their grounds. Best time to go. Probably Mothering Sunday, when the drive is lined with alternating pink and white flowing cherry trees in all their divine glory. Book early.
