Brasserie Forty 4 (44) Description

brasserie forty four 44Brasserie Forty 4 is a bright, buzzy, fun-loving restaurant located in a waterfront setting in Leeds city centre. Hardly a brasserie, more a restaurant, though the distinction seems to become steadily more blurred these days, this eaterie occupies a former grain store - one of the earliest conversions of its kind. Some would say the principle has not changed very much and the interior is a striking example of the genre.

It is a highly popular, informal venue with a fun and lively atmosphere emphasised by a recent interior refurbishment. The restaurant scores consistently high marks in the most respected guides for offering an excellent service and good food at value for money prices. Brasserie Forty 4 has a cosmopolitan style of food and atmosphere that is instantly appealing and sets it apart from the Brasserie norm ... it's a popular venue with personalities from television, stage, music and sport.

The buzz factor is high, unlike the prices - a three-course early bird dinner at £19.95, including half a bottle of wine, is not exactly going to bring in the bailiffs.

Their starters might include offerings such as: chilli and ginger octopus salad; home-cured bresaola with goat's cheese, vinaigrette and rocket; salt cod fritters with spring onion aioli; or tortellini of confit chicken and sweetcorn, with red pepper coulis.

Whilst the mains could include: pan-fried fillet of sea bream with tomato and balsamic tarte tatin and fennel marmalade; best end of lamb with minted tagliatelle, summer vegetables and pea sauce; roast fillet of hake on shellfish risotto and lobster sauce; or confit leg of duck with creamed cabbage and a port sauce.

However, you cannot ignore their desserts: Brasserie 44's famous chocolate and amaretto fondue - for a minimum of 2 people; strawberry shortbread with rosewater cream; Tuscan lemon cake with crystallised violet petals and crème fraiche; or a chocolate connoisseur's platter. See what I mean, simply irresistible.

Their full details, including their excellent value fixed price menus, wine list and much more can be found on their Website.

Your Reviews of Brasserie Forty 4 (44)

Richard Lewis (8 March 2006)

My friends and I are here in Leeds on business and as this was just around the corner from our hotel we thought we'd give it a go. We ate from the early bird menu, at £20 per head for a 3 course meal and half bottle of wine no complaints there! The place itself was quite trendy, however I thought the decor was somewhat confused. As we did not smoke we were taken through to the non smoking restaurant. This was much more formal than the non smoking area, with quite smart decor but somewhat odd....can't quite put my finger on it. All that said, onto the food! It was excellent, excellent presentation and portion size. The wine (I got the half bottle of merlot) was excellent as well. We had a really friendly waitress so all in all I would wholeheartedly recommend this establishment.

Jenny Atkinson (16 January 2006)

Myself and three friends had a meal on Saturday evening, 14.1.06. The Brasserie has a lovely atmosphere and the staff were excellent. My starter was very good as was the dessert. However, my main course, lemon sole, wasn't cooked properly and had to be returned. The staff were very apologetic and immediately offered a replacement. As we are all non smokers we were disappointed to find that the restaurant does allow smoking and, unfortunately, three of the six people on the next table were smoking constantly through the meal. However, in spite of this we would return.
