Having visited it last week, my advice is do have the steak and avoid the king prawns and lamb. I found the prawns small, frozen supermarket type, rather than king and the lamb tagine, was just basic lamb curry. I also found the starter of poached egg and mushroom so tiny, I had to search for the mushroom. It is very expensive and I would not recommend it.

Don't be too easily charmed by the French on the menu. Charging eleven pounds for a starter of 'crevettes', only to serve up a skewer of chewy king prawns in garlic butter is is not fair. They just look the frozen variety to me, and I was tempted to send them back.

Having said that, there is a lot right with Chez Gerard - the decor is very pleasant - a cut above other chains - and the steak is superb! Generous portions, impeccable service and nice ambience all help to make it a far cry from the miserly down-market food offerings from other French Bistro chains. I have dined there twice and about to take a party of eight there for a good value, quality meal. The wine is not too excessively priced and there is a good list.
