Britannia Spice
150 Commercial Street, Ocean Drive, Edinburgh, EH6 6LB
Recommended by Les Routiers and Best in Scotland BIBA 2006, British Curry Awards 2007-10, this much acclaimed Far Eastern restaurant is conveniently located in Leith where it continues to pull in the crowds. Unlike many restaurants of its kind it spreads the net for special dishes far wider, and the waiting staff are only too eager to explain the origin of dishes and ingredients. They have a discounted online takeaway menu. Starters of macher bhorta, tom yum and sweet and sour prawn puree are taken at random from an impressive list. Main courses include chicken Ceylon, harrey masaley ka gosht, and from Nepal the Himalaya rui khumbi, the celebrated spicy trout. Bangladeshi amer murgh uses tender pieces of chicken cooked with mango pulp, cream and selected spices.

From Thai expect to find pad gra prao, carefully selected mussels, with squid and prawns stir fried with chilli.
The list of dishes is almost endless and changes as experimentation, often with the mix of spices yields regional and vegetarian delights. If you have a favourite dish of your own chances are they will be able to recreate it for you on the spot.
The wine list is an example to the genre with house wine from £10.50, and two wines specially produced by Cobra called General Billy's, "a wine that will not go to war with spicy food", both red and white at £11.50 a bottle.

REVIEWS OF Britannia Spice
John Paterson (8 January 2012)
Britannia Spice – as its name suggests – is located beside the Royal Yacht Britannia down on the Shore in Leith. The restaurant continues the nautical theme with navy and gold throughout and the tables being a polished wood, just like the deck of a boat. The room is large and spacious so it feels very airy – just what you want on the muggy nights we are experiencing at the moment. On the night we visited, the restaurant was fairly quiet so the service we got was second to none, waiter greeted us at the front door with a smile and our first drink arrived at the table very promptly. The menu at Britannia Spice is very extensive, with dishes available from India, Bangladesh, Nepal and Thailand. We particularly liked this feature as it separated the restaurant from all the millions of other Indian restaurants in Edinburgh.

This classy Indian restaurant has a great reputation throughout Edinburgh and worldwide for better than average cuisine of a spicy nature, so after a strenuous afternoon of shopping at the nearby Ocean Terminal shopping centre, my daughter and I decided this was definitely the moment for a curry. As my mother and I are both pretty indecisive people when it comes to choosing anything from a menu that has more than one thing on it, the helpful waiter chap recommended quite a few dishes for us. We went for the Murgh Masallam and actually, I think the other dish was a good old Tikka Masala, which I know is a pretty unadventurous dish to go for, but it tasted so good. Add some garlic nan bread and pilau rice, and you have yourself one awesome meal. Aptly, being near the water and the Royal Yacht Britania, the restaurant's interior is very nautical, with a lot of blue and sail decoration on the go, so you do feel like you could be eating in someone's large yacht. I should also add that not only does Britannia Spice offer Indian food, it also has a range of Bangladeshi, Nepali and Thai cuisine on the menu.
