Britannia Spice Description

Recommended by Les Routiers and Best in Scotland BIBA 2006 this much acclaimed Far Eastern restaurant is conveniently located in Leith where it continues to pull in the crowds. Unlike many restaurants of its kind it spreads the net for special dishes far wider, and the waiting staff are only too eager to explain the origin of dishes and ingredients.

They also do takeaway at 15% discount, but do not deliver. Starters of macher bhorta, tom yum and sweet and sour prawn puree are taken at random from an impressive list. Main courses include chicken Ceylon, harrey masaley ka gosht, and from Nepal the Himalaya rui khumbi, the celebrated spicy trout. Bangladeshi amer murgh uses tender pieces of chicken cooked with mango pulp, cream and selected spices. From Thai expect to find pad gra prao, carefully selected mussels, with squid and prawns stir fried with chilli.

The list of dishes is almost endless and changes as experimentation, often with the mix of spices yields regional and vegetarian delights. If you have a favourite dish of your own chances are they will be able to recreate it for you on the spot.

The wine list is an example to the genre with house wine from £10.50, and two wines specially produced by Cobra called General Billy's, " a wine that will not go to war with spicy food", both red and white at £11.50 a bottle.

Your Reviews of Britannia Spice

Lil P (28 October 2009)

I totally agree with the other reviews here, Britannia Spice has to be the very best Indian restaurant in Edinburgh. As stated by the gentleman before me, the staff are excellent - always cheery and nothing is too much trouble for them. We went for an early dinner last night and, although we hadn't booked, our group of six was welcomed with open arms. The drinks arrived within minutes and we all opted for starters and main courses. My chicken sheesh kebab was probably the tenderest piece of meat I've ever tasted and everyone else enjoyed the selection of pakora, bhajis and other things that were being shared around the table. Main courses were just as good and I can definitely understand why this restaurant has all the awards. I recommend the Thai or Nepalese dishes for a bit of a change from the old routine, but my husband enjoyed his Bangladeshi special chicken. All in all, an amazing meal at a very friendly restaurant - will definitely be back!

Ian Anderson (9 April 2009)

We went to Britannia Spice for a family 18th birthday celebration and had an absolutely wonderful evening. The waiters made it special by their exceptional good nature and humour. They made just the right amount of fuss for the birthday boy, giving him a free beer, and laying on an ice cream 'cake' with a candle for dessert for everyone - complete with the most tuneless rendition of 'Happy Birthday' you'll ever hear! The price for a starter, drinks and main course for 6 people came to £125 - about £21 per head. It was good value. The starters in particular were exquisite but the main course was very tasty too. My 16-year-old son's comment afterwards was 'Even if the food had been absolutely rubbish, it would have been worth going there because the waiters were such fun; and even if the service had been awful, I would go again for the delicious food. But the fact was that both were fantastic.' My 14-year-old daughter's comment: 'That was the best meal out ever!'
