Brown Cow & Dragon Description

It's not every day that you call on Buddhist monks to bless the opening of your revitalised pub, but this is Leeds and the unexpected can happen.

Basically this is what looks not unlike a former post office, but probably isn't and either way it hardly matters because the fitting out has been done with skill, and a comfortable pub on the ground floor serves as either just that, a place where classic British food is available together with Thai, or the portal to a very attractive restaurant upstairs with Thai cuisine as its primary offering.

Chai Dangsuth's team on the first floor go for a fusion of Asian influences, incorporating dishes from India, Malaysia, Indonesia, China and Singapore. They specialise in a range of 'feast' menus, which makes the restaurant very popular with the party market. Look for duck breast on a bed of Chinese greens with honey and soy dressing, Thai-style stir fried chicken with fresh ginger, black fungus mushrooms, spring onions and garlic.

The combined cuisine menu in the bar downstairs offers salmon and prawn fishcakes, fish and chips, still a great dish in Leeds, Thai green curry and a universally popular chef's pie of the day.

A well travelled wine list offers plenty of choices by the glass, all at prices that recognise reason. A visit to this well-blessed pub and restaurant is very unlikely to disappoint.

Your Reviews of Brown Cow & Dragon

Jim (14 November 2008)

We visited late on a Thursday night with no reservation. The restaurant was pretty quiet, but the members of staff were excellent and very kind. We couldn't decide on a starter so opted for the farangs menu for £19 each. It was a great decision. The starter itself was enough for four people. The main dishes numbered four plus rice for each person and it was a case of our eyes being bigger than our stomach. The food was fantastic, and they even packed up what we couldn't eat, for lunch the next day. At £50, we will definitely go back.

I've eaten at Brown Cow and Dragon three times. It was great on two occasions but the last time it was disappointing. When I ordered I was told that there would be a thirty minute wait, which was not a problem as we were enjoying a drink. After twenty-five minutes we were told that there would be another thirty minute wait, which we agreed to. After five minutes the waitress came to our table with a bowl of chips that we could nibble on 'complements from the chef.' Unfortunately, when the meals did arrive they had actually forgotten to bring the chips we had ordered and the ‘gas was turned off’ so they couldn't make us any. So the complementary chips were actually the ones we had paid for but they were brought at a different time to the rest of the meal. A complementary free drink would have helped soften the blow but unfortunately that was never offered. We will give it one more chance as it has the potential to be a great pub and restaurant if it improves its service.
