Brown Dog, The Description

Ashley Hancill of The Pig's Ear in Chelsea is heading up this new (2007) gastropub down in Barnes, with Head Chef Steve Gun-Trip, recently at the Chelsea Arts Club in day to day control.

The recipe overall is quite simple. Simple food, simple log fires and straightforward un-fussy décor, as a result of which, predictably, it is working well. Amongst the menu items expect to see stuffed whole artichoke with goats' cheese, smoked haddock with poached egg and Hollandaise, breadcrumbs, steak and kidney pie with horseradish sauce, roast rib of Shorthorn beef with potatoes done in dripping, baked carrots, kale and Yorkshire pudding, followed by apple and plum crumble.

The additional glow you could notice may not be the reflection from your cheeks after a fruitful exploration of the menu, more likely due to the very attractive copper shades by Tom Dixon. Slimming clubs throughout Barnes will be on overtime at this rate.

I ate at the Brown Dog, Barnes, last night and was very impressed. The food was very well presented and delicious. It is for me the best pub food in Barnes and competes with the restaurants too. The baked cod was very tasty, and apparently the duck breast was too. The dog, the fires, the lighting, the stylish relaxed atmosphere, all create a great ambience.
