Browns Bar & Brasserie - Bristol Description
The first Browns opened at Brighton in 1973 with one simple guiding belief, that classic food, well delivered in a stylish environment would be a recipe for success. The only thing that has changed since then is the number of Browns, now running at fourteen, of which six are in London, all prospering with the same theme.
Some of their buildings are particularly legendary in style, sometimes listed and always interesting. The premises at Bristol formerly served as the City's museum, art gallery and the University Dining Rooms, and are modelled on the Doge's Palace in Venice.
The main menu, available throughout the day, starts with appetisers, designed for sharing, with antipasti of Italian meat, vegetarian or seafood. Try the flatbreads with a range of interesting toppings.
In amongst the thirteen starters expect to find slow roasted peppers with tomatoes, garlic and fresh basil. The fish choices include seared beef fillet salad with chilli, garlic, soy and spring onions.
The same theme of comfortable food, well-cooked and presented, continues throughout the main course with Browns's steak, mushroom and Guinness pie well to the fore, a dry cured smoked streaky bacon and Emmenthal cheese burger, and tender roasted rack of lamb with red currant jus, dauphinoise potatoes and sprouting broccoli.
The chalkboard carries a list of the day's specials, but every day except Sunday is Browns's afternoon tea day, served from 2 - 5.30pm; and on Sundays it offers a choice of three roasts. It would be harder to find a dessert much more English than sticky toffee pudding with a rich toffee sauce and clotted cream.
By the way their breakfast and brunch menu is just one of the best, and they do a very nifty prix fixe menu from 5:00 - 6.30pm and 9.30 - 10.30 pm.
The wine list is masterful and not over long, sometimes a great relief to those who find it tiresome to navigate their way through even an interesting list such as this. Many bottles are available by the glass and each group of wines is helpfully classified under headings such as white, red and rose with a reserve selection, house recommendations, New and Old World under them.
Browns at Bristol are well able to deal with groups, and have special menus to look after their particular interests. Click on their excellent Website for further details and menu changes.

Mac (27 May 2008)
I took my wife and daughters for a lunchtime drink on a bank holiday to check the place out before taking the family for an evening meal. The service was prompt, and the coffee was great - the best I've had for a long time. I wish they cleared our table whilst we were there and replaced the cardboard menus with better ones.

My husband and I have had mixed experiences at Browns. The first couple of times we went there, the service was friendly though, on the first occasion, we did have to wait an exceedingly long time for the main course and then for coffee, the menu choice, their winter 2006/07 menu was excellent and the food, when it came terrific. However, the last time we went there, in summer 2007, we were shunted to a small dark side table right next to the busy waiter station, even though the place was by no means full, the choice of dishes on the menu was so disappointing we almost got up and left and the food we eventually chose was so grim and overpriced we wished we had. I can only describe my dish as expensive fish bones in melted butter, and my husbands was a pasta dish so hot he could hardly eat it. We shall probably give it another go, come winter (the winter menu was certainly better than the summer one) when we're hoping it would have bucked its ideas up a bit.
