Browns Bar & Brasserie - Leeds Description
The first Browns opened at Brighton in 1973 with one simple guiding belief, that classic food, well delivered in a stylish environment would be a recipe for success. The only thing that has changed since then is the number of Browns, now running at fourteen, of which six are in London, all prospering with the same theme. Some of their buildings are particularly legendary in style, sometimes listed and always interesting. The premises at Leeds are located on the Headrow in the imposing setting of the 1930s banking hall of the former Leeds Permanent Building Society, who did not do things by halves, believe me.
The main menu, available throughout the day, starts with appetisers, designed for sharing, with antipasti of Italian meat, vegetarian or seafood. Try the flatbreads with a range of interesting toppings.
In amongst the ten starters expect to find Belgium endive, pancetta, blue cheese and toasted pine nut salad or crab and avocado salad. The fish and pasta choices include chargrilled swordfish, angel pasta, and salmon and spring onion fishcakes.
The same theme of comfortable food, well-cooked and presented, continues throughout the mains course with Browns's steak, mushroom and Guinness pie well to the fore, a smoked bacon and Emmenthal cheese burger with chips, lamb cutlets with a Greek salad and very zesty hot chicken salad.
The chalkboard carries a list of the day's specials, but every day except Sunday is Browns's afternoon tea day, served from 2 - 5pm; and on Sundays it offers a choice of two roasts. It would be harder to find a dessert much more English than apple pie and custard, and vanilla cheesecake with strawberry coulis has a good appeal.
By the way their breakfast and brunch menu is just one of the best and they also do a pretty nifty pre-theatre supper from 4 to 6.30pm regardless of where you are going afterwards.
The wine list is masterful and not over long, sometimes a great relief to those who find it difficulty to navigate their way through an interesting list. Many bottles are available by the glass, very few cross the £20 mark. Helpfully each group of wines is classified under headings such as 'elegant and crisp', or 'full and rounded'.
Browns at Leeds are well able to deal with groups, and have special menus to look after their particular interests. Click on their excellent Website for further details and menu changes.

We took our daughter and her friend to Browns recently. They are at Leeds Met training to be nurses and we wanted to treat them to a good meal. We'd had an excellent Sunday lunch there about a month before and we were not disappointed with our evening meal.
The service was excellent and our waiter was exceptional. I had a king prawn starter that was brilliant. Other starters were stuffed peppers and mozarella flat bread. Two hot chicken salads a vegetable lasagne and rack of lamb, which was cooked to perfection and a couple of portions of chips. Three of us had puddings, which were delicious, and we managed two large carafes of wine. All that came in at £105.45, which I think is pretty good considering the quality of the food the surroundings and the service. We would certainly go again when we are next in Leeds.

We went to Browns on Sunday evening, the impressions are very bad. They didn't have half of the dishes on the menu and the service was bad. The total bill came to 67 pounds for 2 people including a bottle of wine. I thought it was too expensive for 2 course meal. Starter was a prawn gratin that was OK. Main course fillet steak with mash and vegetables. When I ordered the waiter came and said that it will come with chips because they run out of potatoes. What does it say to you? Exactly, they are using frozen chips!!!! For the restaurant that is charging 15 pounds for main course it's unacceptable!!!! The main course came with steak, chips and lettuce that mush have been in the fridge for a good week. It's safe to say I won't be coming back!
