Bull and Swan, The Description
The Bull and Swan in High Street St Martins at Stamford has fond connections for many Stamfordians, including this one, for whom it was a vital point of refreshment after bell-ringing at the nearby church was completed. A handsome building with fine stone mullioned windows it has an immediate feeling of warmth and history and a recent change in ownership (2005) has given a new lease of life, without causing the wholesale loss of character sometimes associated with what has come to be known as a "refurb".
An excellent range of beers covers some of the less well known favourites, including Deuchars IPA, Batemans, Adnams and other delights.
Excellent food is served in rooms adjoining the bars, the courtyard which has covered, heated when necessary, accommodation, or spaces in the garden. The menu could be described as broadly brasserie with modern additions, but it certainly packs them in and the inn is close enough to the centre of Stamford to be popular at lunchtimes.
This is the hotel area of Stamford where dining in prices can be both high and the meals variable in quality. The presence of a traditional inn selling decent food at prices that compare well is a welcome boost to those looking for something unpretentious and good value.

We went to the bull and swan because we were told about the new managers. The food was out of this world. With a new bar menu there’s food for all tastes and at a good price we will now be in the regular’s roll on Christmas dinners.
Bev (18 August 2007)
It had a good pub atmosphere with real ale but accommodation was very poor - unfortunately everything that's bad about a pub accommodates there; there were rooms over the bar and so very noisy. The bedroom was scruffy (carpet stained and not hovered, furniture tacky, disgusting kettle etc. The bathroom was a joke (shower curtain black, and it was positioned so high up the wall that dials could not be reached, both towel rail and toilet seat were broken. The restaurant was no better - very damp and musty smell, no atmosphere (probably because there were no diners - only the four of us plus two others all night). The food was OK but overpriced for what it was and several items on menu and wine list were not available.
It was a real shame, just needs some TLC, a good clean and a spruce up but felt like owners just wanted the money rather than concerned about providing a good/comfortable experience for their guests. All in all not a bad pub for a drink but certainly would not recommend it for either eating or accommodation.
