Bunk Inn, The Description
Located in the deep heart of the West Berkshire countryside, The Bunk Inn is a well run family country inn with rooms, full of warmth and comfort, yet it's only a few minutes away from the M4 and A34. Whilst you toy with the menus, wine lists and appetisers like butterfly prawns or vegetable spring rolls demand your attention. The well tuned starter selection could bring peppered tuna with wasabi mayonnaise and Asian slaw or smoked duck and chicory salad.
For those of a vegetarian inclination, a source of excitement awaits with the main course of wild mushroom, courgette and goats' cheese tartlet while many fish lovers may be drawn to the baked salmon fillet in a filo parcel with green beans and hollandaise sauce.
Desserts present some tempting options such as blackberry cheesecake with fruit coulis and the classic vanilla crème brûlée. The Bunk has around 10 sound wines by the glass, well supported by an interesting and thoughtful list.
Your Reviews of Bunk Inn, The
Bitter Drinker (8 June 2009)
An excellent evening had by all. What a lovely surprise it was to walk into this, what I assume is newly refurbished hostillery. A long stretch of shining granite with lovely high backed leather bar stools was our first sight. A selection of 4 real ales to choose from one of which was my favourite West Berkshire Brewery bitter. We were greeted in a pleasant manner and asked if we were there to dine, we hadn't booked but we were assured that they would be able to accommodate us. After perusing the menu and specials we were seated in a tucked away restaurant with walnut tables and slate mats. High backed leather chairs made for a comfortable few hours picking our way through food which I can only describe as wonderful, fresh and delicious. The wine list was extensive but we settled for a bottle of the house Pinot Grigio. I will be recommending this place even if it is just for the desserts.

They so nearly get it right every time. The setting is great, very country and they have a good selection of wines and beers. The shoulder of lamb is usually excellent although I stopped ordering it after being served it once so dry it had obviously been left in the oven and forgotten about for a couple of days. That was a couple of years ago though, so we decided to give it another try. Last night the crab and prawn starter was just right, delicate and with a tasty small leaved salad, and the ham and melon was well worth eating. The steak was very well flavoured and cooked extremely well although the cold béarnaise sauce was an interesting touch. All ruined by the calves liver (described as being served pink on the menu) bringing back memories of the brown stuff served by my mother in my childhood and accompanied by bacon, which judging by alternating raw and burnt areas had had a bit of a disagreement with the microwave. It was nice of them to knock £7 off the bill for an inedible £17 dish though.
