But 'n' Ben Restaurant Description
Every so often one comes across a trace of paradise and But 'n' Ben is a wonderful example. Not far out of Arbroath in two gently refashioned cottages you can enjoy the traditional Smokies in various mouth-watering manifestations. It must almost go without saying that ingredients are known almost to which part of the ocean they emanated from, everything is wonderfully fresh, and one can eat with confidence and enjoyment. Nor are the carnivores neglected and the local abattoir (yes, there are a few surviving) facilitates quality beef. Homemade jams, chutneys and Scots baking further enhance the essential homeliness of this delightful place. Thirty-strong wine list with house wine at £9.50.

Wow, what a gem, my wife and I met a couple while on holiday in Norway who recommended that we try this great restaurant. We tried it today for my birthday treat. The food, friendly staff and value for money mean that we will be regular customers from now on.

My girlfriend and I took my grandmother out for a birthday lunch to the But 'n' Ben and we couldn't find fault anywhere. The smell as we approached the restaurant made our mouths water. We received a warm welcome and were shown to our table, which was in a lovely position. The waiting staff were friendly and attentive at all times and were very efficient. I had the haddock pan-fried in oatmeal, expecting a 'lunch-menu' portion but was glad I hadn't ordered a starter when I was presented with a giant fish with bundles of chips. The fish was perfectly cooked, flaky and flavoursome and the chips were fluffy and delicious. My girlfriend ordered the famous smoky pancake and was thrilled with it. It was absolutely delicious, bursting with flavour and the pancake fluffy and light. Although I did not taste my grandmother's sautéed mushroom pancake she seemed very pleased and polished it off. It looked delightful and smelled divine.
We were surprised when, having brought our main dishes which seemed complete, the waitress proceeded to treat us with large dishes of freshly prepared and very tasty carrots and broccoli, and the most mouth-watering fluffy baked potatoes, all of which were buttered and cooked to perfection. It really was a treat and we were all overflowing with compliments for the food. Despite being stuffed from this we didn't miss an opportunity to test the dessert trolley; choosing lemon cheesecake, mine with cream, my girlfriend's without it, and apple pie and cream for granny. They were truly indulgent and even though we were so full the cheesecake was so light and fluffy that it went down very easily. All in all this was a great dining experience on all levels and one which we will certainly be repeating soon. Also, we had booked a table which was good well as the restaurant was packed.
