Butley-Orford Oysterage
Market Hill, Orford, IP12 2LH
Fish and seafood rarely get fresher than this and there are many enthusiastic customers who can vouch for the bounties of the sea served at this Orford oyster shop and restaurant. The Butley Orford Oysterage has been around since the 1950s and has been renowned for providing fresh local fish from the North Sea to its loyal clientele. Smoked dishes are also popular at this restaurant where the atmosphere is friendly and laidback, a perfect place to drop by with a friend for a quick and tasty lunch. The menu naturally demonstrates a passion for anything that has emerged from the sea, where starters could typically be griddled mussels with a crunchy garlic topping followed by a main course of skate with brown butter sauce or half dozen Butler oysters.Fish and seafood rarely get fresher than this and there are many enthusiastic customers who can vouch for the bounties of the sea served at this Orford oyster shop and restaurant. REVIEWS OF Butley-Orford Oysterage
Mike Harvey (11 April 2010)
My wife and I have made at least four visits here - two in the last six months in spite of a journey of about 80 miles each way for us. If you are expecting a bit of bowing and scraping and elaborate decor don't go. If however you want oysters and simply cooked fish dishes then this is for you - and go there feeling hungry. £50 for two people with an excellent Sauvignon - beat that! I have eaten at many other much more expensive restaurants for twice the price and half the pleasure. Eat well, after coffee you can visit the castle and walk round the delightful village.
Ray & Gill Kinghorn (18 May 2009)
Please disregard the uncomplimentary reviews below, this place is fine. No problem with the service, sufficiently attentive but not obtrusive - I daresay being pleasant to the staff goes a long way. Food is not Michelin, but very good, fresh, and fairly-priced. Wine list is a little on the expensive side, but they do wines by the glass if you prefer. Tap water is cheerfully supplied. We would definitely visit again.
